"This morning, you're going to write a paragraph on your past experience in Olympus Academy. Any questions?"
After a short pause, no one moved a muscle so the teacher continued. "If you do not have paper, please take some from my pile in the corner - feel free."
The first day of school at Olympus Academy was one of the most painstaking events that occurred every year. Zeus wanted to have an easy overview of the class on the first day of his freshman year, you know, like normal schools did, but Olympus Academy was pretty weird. Zeus has a feeling there wouldn't be many easy assignments during the year, though he'd seen in the email there was an annual field trip to Othrys High. Who knows, maybe they scheduled that for a weekend.
Although it was hard for Zeus to be impatient, Mr. Atlas' painful assignment caused an exception. "After you finish, find a study partner to bring you any makeup work for the rest of the year."
Gods, Zeus was not the type to automatically find a buddy, but he finished his paragraph quickly and as he glanced across the room, his heart quite nearly stopped.
A tanned girl with long, chocolatey hair braided into a fancy coronal style had just got up to stand by her desk and was quietly scanning the room, looking for someone to pair up with. Zeus made his way toward her and said, "Um... hi. My name is Zeus. What's yours?"
The girl flushed slightly and fiddled with her peacock feather earrings. "Hi, Zeus," she said apprehensively, then held out her hand for him to shake. "My name's Hera. Do you have a partner already?" Then she turned redder. "You probably do, don't you?"
Zeus shook her hand and shoot his head. "Actually, I don't, I was going to ask you to be my partner." He smiled and gestured for Hera to follow him back to his seat, which was near the windows. Then he scooted an empty seat's chair for Hera, who brought over a sheet of paper and a pen.
As they discussed the topic, a resonating knock on the door silenced the chatter. Mr. Atlas rushed to the door and opened it for a boy with a crinkled uniform. Mr. Atlas turned to the class and cleared his throat, an odd smile plastered to his face.
"May I introduce to you our newest addition to Olympus Academy: Hermes. Everyone, please welcome him."
"Is he a freshman?" Zeus asked. "He looks like an eighth grader."
Hera shrugged. "I dunno, but some freshmen really look like middle schoolers."
"You don't, though."
"Well." Hera smiled. "I'm a sophomore, so that might be why."
They watched as Mr. Atlas explained the assignment and Hermes joined an edgy looking goth boy at his table.
"Not the pair I was expecting, but anyways, can I get your number? You know, for important academic purposes."
Hera took out her phone and said, "Give me yours and I'll text you."
"Okay." Zeus wasn't used to such a forward girl, and he was into it, to be honest. "So you're a sophomore? Do you like it here?"
She nodded. "I mean, yeah. There's a lot of drama, but what do you expect in a boarding school. The teachers are alright, at least the ones I've had, but I wouldn't get on Professor Kronos' bad side. He goes by 'professor', remember that."
"Oh, okay. I think I have him next class."
"Is everyone finished their paragraph?" Mr. Atlas interrupted the chatter again. After some hesitant nods, he continued, "Would anyone like to share? No? Okay, I'll start calling names." He looked at the seating chart and rattled off names until the bell rang.
