As he strolled down the hallways, Poseidon grinned at the students in the various classes as he hummed a sea chanty. It seemed like everyone's eyes widened when they saw him out of class on the first day. The truth was, he had snuck out of class to use the bathroom and got a little sidetracked, then went through the supply closet in the bathroom, which was supposed to be locked, and ended up with a possibly toxic film of greenish water covering the bathroom floor. So there he was, sauntering down the main hall of Olympus Academy, humming a tune, his shoes slightly squeaking.
"Poseidon, why aren't you in class?" a feminine voice asked with obnoxious superiority. Poseidon stopped himself from groaning; he recognized the annoyingly responsible voice all too well. He turned around to see a blonde with thick-framed glasses and a crisp uniform standing in the middle of the hallway with her arms folded across her chest.
"Athena," he declared, giving her an annoyed look. "Summer break was great without you."
Athena returned the nasty look. "I must say, I'd prefer a week at Circe's Island Spa to ever seeing you again." She adjusted her glasses and nodded once at him daintily. "You didn't tell me why you're out of class."
Poseidon rolled his eyes. Athena was a snitch, simply put. There was no way he was going to admit that he'd messed up the bathroom, and a thought conveniently popped into his head. "Why are you out of class?" Athena pursed her lips and opened her mouth to talk, but Poseidon cut her off. "I'm gonna be late getting back to class, see you never."
As he headed back to class, Athena caught up with him and glared. "I'm supposed to be in your class too."
"So why weren't you there when Professor Kronos took role, huh?"
She frowned, but it looked more like she was formulating an excuse than actually being mad at him. It took her a moment, but she finally said, "There was—" and was instantly cut off by the sharp sound of heels clicking towards them.
"You two, why aren't you in class?" Both students turned to find Principal Gaea glaring down at the two of them.
Through grit teeth, Athena growled to Poseidon, "If you get me in detention, you're going to die a slow, painful death."
"You'll have to catch me first," Poseidon hissed back, then bolted for the stairs and dashed down. Athena hesitated but did the same, hurrying upstairs rather than following Poseidon. After a dash through the building, they rendezvoused at their classroom with no principal in sight.
Professor Kronos scowled at the two. "You're both late."
"There was an emergency," Athena gasped.
"On the first floor," Poseidon added. "One of the bathrooms sorta exploded."
Professor Kronos looked less than impressed, but marked them as present and directed them to their seats—which were, ironically, right next to each other. Athena shot a nasty look at Poseidon as they retrieved their binders from their bags and opened their Greek history textbooks.
I'll kill you, Athena mouthed.
Sure, Poseidon mouthed back, grinning as he turned to page 20.
