CHAPTER 20

MAXINE’S POV

‘Um, favourite food?’ I asked

‘I don’t think I have one. I like everything.’

‘How fat are you? You can’t like everything. That’s not possible.’ I frowned at John.

‘Well I just made it possible. I don’t think there’s one food that I don’t like.’

‘Broccoli?’

‘Nope. I like that.’

‘Cauliflower?’

‘That’s alright.’

‘Cabbage?’

He shook his head once again.

We were seated in his ‘top of the notch’ silver kitchen with the best of the best appliances. His kitchen looked like the exact replicas of the picturesque ones you see in a magazine. It was simply too perfect. Every chef’s dream. I was leaning against the counter while John had his arms around me. We were simply relaxing after a long and lovely dinner of Mac and Cheese along with some home-made ice cream. John really knew how to please a woman. Although I had tried to help him while he made the dinner, he refused my help over and over again so eventually I gave up trying to offer my help. He wouldn’t even let me load up the dishwasher once we had finished eating.

‘Sardine?’

‘It’s good for you.’

‘That wasn’t an appropriate answer.’

‘It’s okay. Not the best food in the world, but tolerable nevertheless.’

I frowned at him.

We were still going through the stages of knowing one another and so far I liked the things that I was hearing. John was a true gentleman who knew how to take care of a lady. He knew how to keep the conversation going at all times and could go from being childish in one second to being the most mature person in the room. He was sweet, kind and funny. Exactly the things any woman would want in a guy.

‘Why are you trying to find out what I hate to eat anyway?’ he questioned me.

‘Because I want to know.’

He laughed and shook his head.

‘Let’s talk about something else. Or maybe, let’s not talk at all.’ He smiled mischievously.

‘Slow down there big boy. You’ve just finished eating, let’s not get you excited or else something bad may happen.’ I said back to him.

‘Trust me when I say I don’t mind getting excited. Trust me.’

It was now my turn to laugh and shake my head as I processed what John said.

‘Tell me about your past relationships.’ I said, trying to return back to the original aim of the conversation we had been having before he got distracted by the idea of kissing.

‘Really? You want to know about my past relationships?’ he asked disbelievingly.

I nodded slowly.

‘Or is too early for that?’ I asked worriedly.

I didn’t want to seem like the kind of girl who was appearing desperate because I wasn’t. Yes, I liked John. In fact, I liked him a lot but desperate was not a good look for anybody.

‘I don’t know. It’s more of a girl thing to ask that kind of question. And we’ve been dating for a few weeks now so I guess the question would come up soon.’

I smiled. A few weeks. To think that just a month ago, I had been crying my eyes out over the fact that this wonderful guy who was before me would never again like me. It had been just a month ago when I had pushed him away, over and over again because of my stupid rule. Wasn’t life funny? Because now here I am, in his arms wanting to know as much as I could about him. I wanted to know what made him smile, what made him laugh, what made him angry, what calmed him down. Did he enjoy wearing socks to bed? What childhood stories were locked up in his brain? Had he ever drank chocolate milk and laughed so hard it came out of his nose? I wanted to know everything. John was fast taking over my thoughts and invading them whenever I needed to concentrate. Everything from the way he winked at me to the way he smiled at me could send a thrill down my spine and in some cases, I found it unnerving. I wasn’t easily affected like this normally. I was a rational kind of person, and right now, rationality had been thrown out of the window the moment I went on a date with John.

‘So, you think you’re ready to tell me about your past relationships then?’ I asked. Obviously I didn’t want him to tell me anything that he didn’t want to. I didn’t want to appear as the kind of person who enjoyed dragging information out of people who didn’t want to give it out. It was up to him. Whatever he wanted to tell me and whenever he wanted to tell me was up to him.

‘Yes. Sure. What do you want to know?’

‘Your longest relationship?’

‘A year and eleven months.’ He stated with no emotion.

‘Wow, that’s quite a long time.’

He shrugged casually.

‘What was her name if you don’t mind me asking.’

‘Talia Hetwanger.’

I nodded slowly as if her name provided a different perspective to everything.

‘So why did you two break up?’

He sighed and I felt within me that I wasn’t going to like what was going to come out of his mouth.

‘I cheated on her.’

I frowned. I had been right. I didn’t like the sound of that.

I pulled out of his embrace and looked at John’s face. He looked like a child caught in the headlights and appeared to be very uncomfortable.

‘How many times?’ I questioned.

‘I don’t really think we should go into that right now Max. Can we just enjoy the time we have before you have to go?’

He tried pulling me back to him but I wasn’t having it. I wanted to know the whole story. Everything. When you’re about to enter into an official and exclusive relationship with someone, you want to know why it is they cheated on their ex-girlfriend who also happened to be their longest relationship. I didn’t want to go further into whatever we were having with my eyes closed and end up getting burned. No thanks.

‘How many times John?’ I asked again.

‘I don’t know.’ He sighed.

‘Over ten times?’ I asked. I wasn’t expecting a yes. I just wanted to say a drastic number so that he could laugh and tell me he wasn’t that bad. But instead, he said:

‘Yes.’
