Here's another chapter. Sorry it took forever but as some of you know, I have school work up to my eyeballs and exams coming up so Writing isn't top priority for me right now. Enjoy :)
CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE
We entered into the living room with Maxine and her dad in front of me whilst I was analysing every piece of the conversation that had just occurred. I felt like I had totally said the wrong thing and Maxine’s dad was already analysing from the onset. I couldn’t think straight, I was sweating and at the same time trying to reassure myself that everything was going to be alright. Maxine’s dad wouldn’t freak out. Everything would be fine.
‘John.’
I shook my head and focused on Maxine in front of me. She was looking at me with a worried face; her eyebrows slightly raised and her eyes looking straight through into mine.
‘Are you alright?’ she asked.
I looked from her to her dad and nodded quickly.
‘Are you sure?’ she asked worriedly.
I smiled slightly hoping that this would reassure her and I wouldn’t look like some sort of wimp in front of her dad so I nodded for the second time.
‘Honey, I’m going to check on your mother. Come into the kitchen when you’re ready alright? Oh, and bring the hampers and the cake. You know how your mum is.’ He smiled fondly.
He walked into the living room and straight into the kitchen. My eyes followed him until they could no longer see him and he had disappeared.
I placed the hampers gently on the ground to prevent them from falling and I released a huge breath.
‘I know I’m not some thirteen year old guy who’s just meeting his girlfriend’s parents for the very first time. I’m a grown man, with a great job, that pays good money. I have a house, I live on my own. I’m a grown man. I’m not a wimp.’
‘Is the pep talking going well?’
I slowly lifted my head up to Maxine who was smiling at me amusedly.
‘I don’t know why I’m acting like this. This has never happened to me before.’ I admitted.
‘It’s alright. Just keep calm and look at me.’ I stared into her soft eyes and felt myself relax.
I just wanted it to be Maxine and I. I wanted to curl up on my sofa with her in my arms whilst she lay her head back against my chest. That was all I wanted. Peace and Serenity.
‘Baby, it’s going to be fine.’
I nodded and closed my eyes as if preparing myself mentally. Which I was; I had resumed my mini pep talk in my head.
‘Oh and I’m really sorry for the way my dad embarrassed you before with the marriage talk. Ignore him.’
‘We’ll talk about marriage later. Let’s just get through tonight first.’ I said to her, kissing her head as we prepared to go in and face her parents again.
I followed Maxine into the kitchen, all the while looking all around me as I took in my surroundings. Everywhere was neat and tidy, no mess at all. Mrs Rivers certainly tried with everything. The decor was simple yet effective with the colours pale green and cream as the main colours. A few paintings were on the wall as well as a couple of pictures which I couldn’t see properly as we were walking into the kitchen.
Walking into the kitchen, I was smacked with delicious smells from all corners of the kitchen. Everything smelt beautiful.
‘Hello’ A woman in the middle of the kitchen smiled. As soon as my eyes connected with hers, I smiled back. She was basically the older version of Maxine. She wore jeans and a red v necked jumper. Her brown hair, with hints of grey, was wrapped in a messy bun and you could clearly see that she was a beautiful woman. Maxine had received good genes.
