"Lets start with a name. Jack. Why did you call me that earlier?""I don't know, why?"
"Just think, why did you call me Jack?" This time she did think. 'Why did I call him that?' That thought ran through her mind until the words, "What happened on that night" ran off her tongue.
He couldn't sleep. He had had trouble getting to sleep for long time, but nights like this were the worst. Nights when he should be tired beyond belief though, he wasn't. He was wide awake. He could call her, but should he bother her? No, he shouldn't, but he will. He dreaded bothering her like this, yet she'd try to reassure him that she's glad he feels he can call her.
Ring! Ring! Ring!
"Please pick up."
Ring! Ring! Ring!
"Please (Name), please pick up."
Ring! Ring! Ring!
"Plea-"
"Hmm?" She groggily hummed into the phone.
"Hey, (Nickname)." He breathed out in relief.
"Can't sleep?"
"Yeah. Can we, I don't know, talk, or something."
"Uh... Yeah, meet me at the park bench. The one across from the shops."
"Main Street?"
"Yeah, that one. See ya there." Then she hung up. With that, he left, he was already dressed. He didn't change for bed, he knew he wouldn't sleep anyway.
He jogged down the street, heading towards the park bench. He'd be there earlier than her, as he always was. She'd try to get ready quickly, but she was never very successful. And when she ran ran down the sidewalk, in an attempt to not be too late, he knew she wasn't.
"I didn't make you wait to long, did I?"
"Nope," he responded, popping the p. It was only a little fib. It wouldn't hurt her. It was a fib he told her anytime he was early, and he liked to think she could see right through it. That she knew him well enough to know when he lied, or just fibbed a bit. He didn't know if she knew though. Even if she did, she probably wouldn't care.
"Jack! You don't have a coat! Here," she started taking off her scarf, "wear this." He loved her. There weren't words to describe just how in love with her he was, it this was an example. He let her put the ugly scarf, a scarf she loved so dearly, on him. It was a bright green. She said it looked good on him. It was just so bright, it looked like a glow in dark scarf all the time. But he wouldn't say anything, because he loved her, and she loved him in that scarf.
"Happy ?" She just smiled and pulled him along. With that they started there walk, picking up and dropping conversation at random. They could probably go on like this forever. If the reality didn't have to happen, if that fire didn't have to start, if they didn't have to take this route, if he didn't have to call her, they could stay like that forever.
But he did have to call her. They did have to take that route. And that fire did have to happen. All because reality can't mind its own business. It didn't help that she wanted to help. People were running out and shouting about his there buddies were stuck or trapped. He had to just jump in and promise he'd do it.
"After that he ran in and a few minutes later and minutes half of the power plant exploded. Now what do you remember?" Of course he only told her part of their night. Completely leaving out the "their" part of it.
She awoke with a heavy groggy feeling, like she'd been pulled out of a deep sleep. Reluctantly opening her eyes, she found she didn't recognise where she was. The room lacked colour and it was generally dull. It wasn't until a woman in scrubs walked by that she realised where she was. A hospital. But why?
The more she pondered about why she was in a hospital, the more prominent her headache became. It felt like she'd hit the back of her head and she rested her hands where it hurt to try and soothe the pain. But it wasn't working. It wasn't long before a nurse came in to check on her anyway. The nurse rambled over an explanation about how she'd been in an accident that knocked her unconscious and led to her concussion. The nurse mentioned briefly that she may have memory loss, get confused easily, and a few other symptoms she couldn't remember
She'd recovered over the next few days, and the only thing that bothered and kept her from "continuing life as usual" was a small chunk of missing time. A lot of time she just couldn't remember.
Some told her it was nothing. Others, that she was paranoid. So, she tried to drop it but reality just could help itself. It couldn't just leave her alone.
"After that I attempted normal life, only to quickly find out I'd soon have a kid. And my love life quickly died after that." She finished, repeating as much as she remembered as accurately as possible.
"You had a kid?" He questioned.
"Yeah, who ever I was with before the accident is-was the father."
"Where is the kid now?" She fell silent after this question for a bit.
"My son, he had always been sick, so it didn't come as much of a surprise, but it still hurt like hell when he passed. He was only 7, our son, Mr. Jack Napier." 'Our? How did she know his name?' He thought dumbfounded.
"Don't give me that look. I figured it out when we kissed. We were together." Silence and realisation were lovers and mortal enemies in that moment. They worked so well together yet constantly threatened to break one another. Neither spoke until (Name) couldn't help but ask, "What now?".
Shrugging, he responded, "I don't know".
"What does this make us?"
"Complicated. We're complicated," he said with a sigh.
"Can we make it work?" He reached for her hand and they intertwined fingers.
"We found each other. We're here now, so as fate may have it, you're stuck with me." She chuckled at his answer.
"And as fate may have it, you're stuck with this," she joked, motioning to herself. And they were. Who knows how they'll figure it out. That was a problem for a different day. Reality would always be there, waiting for them, but that's alright. It's seems fate is on their side.
