Chapter Ten

Riley's POV

"I'm so sorry about that, she's not really like that. She's more... more... nicer," Vlad attempted to explain. I smiled at the fact that he tried to protect Aisha, even though she was practically going to kill me.

"So," I started, "you're a teacher?"

"Yeah... I mean, no... I mean... Is that bad?" Vlad questioned, worried about what I would think about him if he had said 'yes'.

"Of course it is," I cheered, "But, if you're a vampire, what is there to teach? I bet nobody in the classroom wants to learn about Maths or Biology or even Art." Vlad shrugged.

I opened the classroom door. I felt the cold steel of the doorknob against my hands as I twisted the knob.

The room screamed at me. Literally. Besides the crazy vampire children, there was blood on the fans and walls, people under tables, sausages jammed in the cracks between the chalkboard and the wall and I was pretty sure that there were bats hiding up in the curtains. "SILENCE!"

His vibrating voice echoed in the room. Vlad's eyes turned red. "Vlad, they're just kids. They want to have some fun." I loosened Vlad up. He sighed.

"Hey! You're stepping on the two mice from Alice in Wonderland! You're killing them, get off!" A boy ran up to me and began punching me in my thigh.

"I..."

"Jerr, she didn't mean to," Aisha ran into the room, as Jeremiah burst out into tears. "She didn't see them. Breathers can't see well like us, that's why she accidentally stepped on those two mice."

I tried not to act surprised at the fact that Aisha, and yes, I said Aisha, was comforting a child who probably doesn't even know her.

"I don't understand," I said, bewildered, but exceedingly guilty. Vlad grabbed my hand and pulled me outside. I couldn't feel his hand. AT ALL. It was like a ghost was pulling me away.

"Jeremiah has a condition. He hallucinates, has delusions, lacks responsiveness and sometimes she just turns completely insane. He's schizophrenic," Vlad huffed. I felt as though there was still something he was not telling me. I gazed at Vlad to squeeze out the last bit of information. "He's also Aisha's brother."

I tried not to act surprised. AGAIN.

"I'm sorry, did you just say BROTHER?" I asked, still not knowing why I was so freaked out about it. Vlad nodded. "Wow, not so heartless after all."

"He wants you to say sorry," Aisha sighed, her hands sliding down the frame of the door. I tried to face my fear of someone hating me around here already and walked into the room to apologise the the kid.

"Hey, I am so,so sorry I... stepped on your mice. I am so clumsy. You know, I can get you two more. I know they wouldn't be the same, but maybe we can go hunting in the Black Forest and find some," I grinned.

"There's no way she's going alone, Vlad. She's a breather," Aisha jumped.

"There's no way she's going AT ALL," Vlad denied.

"You have no power over me. Just because this is your house, it doesn't mean you're my master. Yes, ok, you told me a few secrets. And you showed me around. But it still doesn't change how you act around me. You're not my dad, or my mum, or my boss for that matter. Or anyone I have to respect. Are you?" I huffed, not believing what I just said.

"Uhhh, excuse---," Aisha was cut off.

"No. I'm not. I'm just one of those silly little teenaged vampire who think they own a castle and a servant and built an education centre for orphans whose parents died in the war against the Vaccarias," Vlad said, "No-one special."

Guilt filled me up even more. Everyone was looking at me with both sadness and anger in their eyes.

Vlad flitted off.

And I just stood there. Guilty little me.
