Skylar's Neighborhood
New York City, New YorkSkylar
Skylar sits at the kitchen table doing her homework as the news plays on the T.V. She shuts her calculus textbook as she finishes the last problem.
"Finally! I hate calculus, and why assign homework on a Friday? We have lives!", Skylar slides her stuff back into her bag and sets it by the front door. Skylar stretches and stands in the living room looking around.
"Guess I could take a shower then watch a marathon of the Jaws movies." She heads to her and starts to gather up her things when she hears heavy knocks on her door.
"Who could that be? It's seven o'clock." She puts her things back down and peeps through the window this time before opening the door. She sees a tall figure leaning against her door for support as if they're having trouble holding up their own weight.
This doesn't look good.
Skylar slowly opens the door so that the person wouldn't fall down from the door coming out beneath them. She couldn't see their face because it was covered by a hoodie. The person stumbles into the house.
"Hey!", Skylar exclaims as she shuts the door. The person collapses onto the living room couch.
"You can't just barge in here! Who are you?!"
Skylar yanks back the hood of the person's jacket to find the boy from D.C. under it. His face is cut and bruised and his nose seems slightly broken.
"Oh my gosh," Skylar says as she rushes off to get the First Aid Kit from down in the training room. She sets the kit on the coffee table and opens it. She turns to the boy, Riven, and helps him sit up.
Skylar unzips his hoodie and slides it off of him along with his shirt.
"Oh jeez..." Skylar says as she stares at multiple critical wounds on his body.
There are probably more on his back.
Skylar couldn't help but notice the scar that ran across Riven's lower abdomen. From what she could tell, the scar is old because it's a brown color and not red or pink like recent ones would be. She pulls him forward so she can take a look at his back. His back oozes blood from scars that had been ripped back open. Blood was starting to get on the couch and Skylar starts to panic.
Well, he's not getting up. He's barely conscious as it is.
Skylar moves the coffee table away from the couch and helps Riven lay on his stomach on the hardwood floor.
"Alright," Skylar says, "let's get to work."
*****
Skylar wakes up to something moving underneath her. She groans and pinches the whatever it is that's underneath her to get it to stop moving so she can sleep. As she's about to drift back into a deep sleep she hears someone clear their throat.
"Skylar, did you sleep on me all night?"
Skylar shoots up and her eyes widen in shock as she realizes she fell asleep on her knees with her head resting on his abs.
How embarrassing. Plus, he's a murderer and you're affiliated with S.H.I.E.L.D. How inappropriate to be laying on him.
She gets dizzy since she just slung her head up right after she woke up.
"I'm so sorry! I must've gotten so tired after patching you up that I fell asleep on you." She stands up and starts to rub the sleep from her eyes. Riven sits up and rests his back against the cushions while Skylar starts to clean up the First Aid. She heads back down to the training room and puts it up. When she comes back upstairs she finds Riven looking at his wounds with a confused look on his face.
"Why are you-? Oh. They haven't healed."
"It usually heals overnight," Riven pauses, "I have an idea of why this is happening."
"What is it?"
"The man that runs the lab, he saw the video footage of the conference center in D.C."
"And?"
"And that I hesitated when I saw you. He has trainers that teach me stuff."
"Stuff like?"
"How to kill people efficiently with and without my mutation at use."
"Why? And how did you end up with the lab?"
Before the two knew it, they were both engaging in deep conversation.
"Your dad abused you when you were little. Then the cops found out and took him away. You couldn't stay with your mom because she had died during child birth, so the leader of the lab you're from took you in. You let him take you because you were only six and he told you that he would be adopting you when really he was going to be experimenting on you."
Riven nods his head.
"You weren't born with your mutation?"
"No. I wasn't."
Skylar raises her eyebrows. "What is your mutation exactly? I know it's an animalistic mutation, but what animal?"
"A wolf."
"A wolf? So you're like from Twilight."
"Not exactly."
"What makes you different?"
"Well, first of all I'm not fighting with a vampire for a girl named Bella."
"Are you fighting for anything at all?"
"Freedom."
Skylar gets silent. Riven decides to change the subject back to his mutation.
"I can change into an actual wolf. That I can do. When I do change, I usually go into primal instinct I can't stop until what I've set out to do is done. Whether it be blood shed or kidnapping someone."
"Are you planning on kidnapping me?"
"Never. I had to escape from the lab and I knew this would be a safe place."
"My mother-I mean- Kit, could've been home and you would've been toast!"
"I knew you would protect me."
Skylar scoffs. "What makes you think I would protect you? You've murdered people."
"Well, I can tell you would've done something better than what S.H.I.E.L.D. would've done to me because you let me sleep in your house," he pauses, "and you slept peacefully on my abs all night long."
Skylar's cheeks get red and she stands up from
where she was kneeling to look at Riven's wounds."I'm going to fix breakfast," she says with a huff.
