it was calum's first year starting a new school in a new country. was he nervous? sure he was, but it wasn't something he wasn't prepared for. during his last few weeks in athens and his beginning weeks in america, calum took the time to watch a handful of documentaries on the u.s life and boy, has he learned a lot.
like he learned that american's are quite friendly, in some parts of the country, love their sports, they have larger portion sizes- oh and of course, the 'how are you' used as a greeting and not a question. but after watching over a dozen documentaries over the last three weeks of summer, calum and his mother dubbed these all as stereotypes in which his mother would tell him "to judge 'em when you seem 'em."
now here calum was on the first day of school, wearing his favorite plaid skirt, white knee high socks and a little blouse with his blazer slung over his shoulder just in case it were to get cold, which he expected it to since for a grecian like him, 89 degrees was the coldest it'd get in athens.
although calum had his complete and utter hopes up for his first day at school he was a bit nervous. why? well, the boy didn't speak great english, he could speak fluently of course and understand and read well, but he was afraid he wouldn't catch on to the 'lingo' the americans had equipped in their country; but yet again he'll soon enough learn.
calum took his first two steps out of the door, the 'cool' air hitting him in the face as he sighed, making a note to go outside more to further habituate himself with this new environment.
he slowly made his way down the steps of his cobblestoned driveway, rocking on his heels a bit before looking around, unsure whether he were to walk to school or wait for what was called a school bus, but he decided the walking wasn't too bad, and that's exactly what he did. soon enough he reached the school, wishing he had left a bit sooner; but the walk did help him become a bit more familiar with his town and school district.
the little boy took a deep breath before scoping the parameters of his school. it wasn't as big or nice as the one in athens, but it definitely met the visuals he had in his head of a stereotypical 'american school'. and with this, the boy took another deep breath and began to walk into his new school, his eyes fixed on his floppy tied shoe as his small feet pattered against the shiny floors over to the main office where he quickly checked in, getting his schedule and his lock. he already knew he wasn't going to use his locker since he didn't have much to put away, so he quickly disposed of the lock and made his way to his first period class, which was excitingly a block period; math with whom was named 'mr. hemmings.'
the boy frowned a bit. he was good at math, of course he was, but the subject did make him cringe in some strange way. his eyes moved up from his shoes, searching around for this 'math room' which soon came up to his left, a bit proud of himself that he found the classroom so easily. the only thing that made the boy uneasy, besides the class being math, was that the class was in session and there was nothing that calum hated more than walking into a started class.
the raven haired boy took another long breath as he twisted the silver doorknob, pushing it open as he stepped into the class, his body completely freezing as everyones eyes were on him, but he didn't care. his brown eyes somehow managed to fall upon his math teachers face.
the man was tall, built in an almost lean way, broad shoulders. his blonde hair was fluffy and curly, almost like calum's own but more- well better. the tall man wore a black button up tucked in his jeans—his rather tight, tight jeans.
"i'm assuming you're calum?" mr. hemmings spoke, dropping the marker he was using to write a quadratic equation onto his shiny walnut desk, rubbing his hands together before facing the class filled with eleventh grade kids.
"class this is calum, our new exchange student. be nice and welcome him in, yes? great." mr. hemmings said before tilting his head to the direction where calum should get going on. "go on and sit, i have a class to finish." the teacher muttered, calum's face turning into a frown as he made his way over to the back, sitting next to a lilac haired boy with a shining eyebrow piercing that calum couldn't stop looking at.
"could you please stop looking at me." the lilac haired boy whispered, calum's fat cheeks turning red as he quickly looked away, clearing his throat as he quickly pulled out the an almost inaudible apology, the lilac boy scoffing before turning to face calum.
"m'michael, but you can call me mikey or whatever." michael began, calum still refusing to look at him although he was being talked to. "you know, i'm used to people looking at me. i get it, my eyebrow piercing is shiny, it's okay." the lilac haired boy laughed, causing calum to crack a smile. the tan boy was about to reply before he heard mr. hemmings voice boom through the classroom.
"hood," he began, turning around the face the class, his blue eyes darting past. "detention." was all the man said, causing calum to fling his arms up.
"what? i didn't even do anything!" calum exclaimed, causing his teachers eyes to squint at him.
"are you challenging me on that?" mr. hemmings spoke, calum rolling his eyes at the man.
"no? i don't even know what the means, what i'm saying here is that i didn't do anything for detention." calum retorted, his thick accent peaking through his gentle soft voice. mr. hemmings let out a sigh before shaking his head.
"you have such a big mouth for a little boy." the older man said before taking the time to fill calum out a detention slip.
"i know."
