Siege on Wisteria

FIRE,

SCREAMS,

and the sweet stench of burning human flesh enveloped Kain Everstill's senses as he walked steadily into the ravaged kingdom of Wisteria, a once very beautiful kingdom, with magnificent marble walls, rivers running along the sides, and the people above all were too amiable for their own good. Now, it belonged to King Lucien and Queen Aria of the Karakova Kingdom, and they intended to protect what was theirs: power.

Kain muted the wails of the citizens outside and instead concentrated only on the task at hand: making sure he had killed everyone inside the palace. He didn't particularly agree nor disagree with this. In fact, he felt nothing. Whatever the King and Queen declared, he obeyed without a trace of emotion flashing across his nonchalant face.

Blood dribbled down his back as he allowed his blood-soaked, double-bladed sword to rest on his shoulder. The smell of blood appealed to him. It was like a cologne that he spritzed on every morning, except it was like a close friend, staying by him, whispering secrets and taunting him sinisterly. He took one last look around the interior of the castle, with piles of wood splayed out everywhere, allowing the fire to dance on top of the wood as if in victory, and then began to step over the threshold.

Suddenly, he stopped and turned around, hearing a high pitched wail emitting from behind what was once the thrones of the King and Queen of Wisteria, now tainted with the flowing blood of their dead bodies. Kain stepped cautiously forward and as he neared, the wails grew louder. It was an infant. He carefully pulled away the Queen's deep blue cloak and saw a bright eyed infant, with its cheeks flaming red and it's white puffy dress streaked with her mother's blood. This was the child the King had been speaking of before he had slain him.

"You may slay me my fair knight, but you will never harm my child!" The King shouted before he succumbed to blood loss.

Kain raised his sword off his shoulder and placed it against the infant's body, meaning to finish her off, but paused once again when he noticed that the infant grew quiet and only stared at him with a strange curiosity. Suddenly, strange, glowing marks appeared on the child. Her arms, legs, and Kain supposed even her back were glowing with these markings that he knew were only on his body. Kain felt a tug, a connection with the child and slowly felt himself taking the sword off of the child and ripped off the silver gauntlet that covered his wrist, revealing the black tattoo-like marks weaving around his skin. He realized, that they were in fact the same markings on the child, except that hers were glowing white. Was this it? Was that the sign?

Kain didn't have time to contemplate, so he instead leaned down to brand the child, knowing that he would be leading this child down to the depths of Tartarus with him. He planted a tender kiss on her soft forehead and lingered. A spark of energy was shared between the two and when he pulled back a glowing mark appeared on her forehead and soon disappeared along with the markings. The infant did not cry, but instead gave him a sort of smile and reached for him with her plump arms. Kain quickly flickered his gold eyes around the room and swiftly picked up the child and hid her beneath his black cloak. He stared at the child's dead parents and gave them a blessing, then quietly said to them,"I am sorry. Your child will never be safe." And stepped out of the castle.

"Why have you a child?" Queen Aria spoke harshly as she appraised the infant in Kain's arms with a sliver of jealously. Kain kneeled down and set the child down onto the tile, careful to lay her on top of the cloak before he did so.

"I found her after we destroyed Wisteria, Your Majesty." Kain replied, watching her face contort in disgust for a moment.

"So why did you not kill the infant then Kain? Are you not our merciless knight?" The King questioned, raising an brow to inquire as to whether or not he was testing his loyalty.

Kain replied calmly without sparing a lie,"This is the child of the prophecy, Your Majesty." Both the King and the Queen sat up straight and took a sharp intake of breath. The room grew so quiet that you could barely hear the light smacking of the baby's lips.

"This is true?" The Queen stood up abruptly and stormed down her throne, her long white skirts dragging behind her, holding her pregnant stomach. Her cheeks were flaming as she stopped in front of the baby, her staff hovering a bit above the baby's heart. Kain met her furious blues with his calm golds.

Kain nodded and said cooly,"Now why would I lie Your Majesty, about this?" If she killed the baby now, then surely he would lose his mentality.

The King nodded. "It is true Queen Aria. Why would Kain, our most trustworthy knight, ever lie to us?" He agreed. "Besides, this is important. It is the Prophecy we are talking about! This child, when she is of that age, will be able to help the kingdom." A sly smile spread across his thin face. Queen Aria caught onto his motive and smiled as well, removing her staff from the child.. Her icy blue eyes still stared at the child with contempt though as she did so and she made Kain guide her back to her throne, brushing a hand across his as he did so, hoping to maybe befuddle him, but without any sign of it. Kain then strode back down and picked up the hungry child, who by then started to whimper.

The king dismissed him with a bit of irritation on his face as the whimpers slowly turned into cries. "Alright. Child may stay, but it is your responsibility to raise the child. We already have one coming along and don't need another screeching pigeon to come along." Kain bowed his head and started to walk out of the throne room when the King stopped him and said,"Kain. You have a blade stuck in your back." Kain shrugged and reached behind him to swiftly yank the sword out, feeling the wound heal up rapidly as he did so. There was barely any blood and no pain.

Kain stared down at the child as he left the throne room and headed down to the kitchen to scrounge up for some gruel for the child to eat. That was right, no pain, because he couldn't feel any. After all, no matter how many times he was "killed", he never died. He didn't notice it, because he was destined to remain immortal forever, an element any human would desire, but a trait he would rather die with. Seeing death all around often made him want to experience it himself.

The child tugged on his long, raven colored hair and stuck her hand in her mouth. Kain pushed her hand away.

"Alright. Food." He muttered and pushed open a heavy door, leading into the back of the kitchen.

"Ma'eu je voluex." Kain whispered beneath his breath as Marie, a middle aged cook, came bustling over to him to ask what he needed.

'Circle of life', he thought and handed the child off to Marie so she could feed it.

Hey there! Well, Luna_Waters and I have decided to write a story together! We're not sure of the title yet, but we're getting there. Anyways, there are a few things I'm just establishing here:

-We're doing this story in Kain's view and then soon in the girl's view.

-Luna_Waters will play the girl, whose name will come in the next chap and I will play Kain Everstill, the emotionless knight. ;)

-It may take a while to update, depending on both of our schedules, and if you see any errors then just know that we WILL come back and edit.

-Lastly, the last phrase Kain used was not in any sort of language (I think). I just typed up some random words, so if it turns out that I actually said something really insulting, well, I'm sorry.
