Back at the cave a few days later after the encounter with Pacifica and Gideon, the twins sat cross each other, silent in the dark depths of the cave. Mabel dipped her bare feet in the water and bowed her head, her wings drooping.
Her brother noticed this, walking over to her and placing a hand on the fairy's shoulder.
"What's on your mind?" Dipper asked softly, Mabel looking at him with sorrow in her eyes.
"I guess...I'm a little homesick" Mabel sighed sadly.
Dipper was silent, sitting down on the stone banks of the cave's pool, not caring the floor was slightly damp and cold.
"Come on, sis. That's not all that's making you upset. You're holding something back; what is it?" he pressed, gently trying to pry the burden from Mabel.Without warning, Mabel's neon green eyes teared up, her pink hair going slightly faded and she looked away in shame that Dipper saw her tears.
"Mabel?" Dipper asked, now worried.
"I-It's just...I...It's about what Gideon and Pacifica said. I don't wanna hurt anyone or get hurt....but what if Mommy and Daddy get found out and caught, taken to some lab and experimented on? who's to say Stan won't submit us there for a high price?" she pondered tearfully.
"I don't wanna be a lab rat and die! I don't want YOU to die either!"
"Don't think like that!" Dipper exclaimed, though his voice was as soft as before.
"Stan and Ford won't do that, they love us to bits, even if we're not human. Look at me, Mabel-" her eyes flickered up to Dipper's face, still leaking salty tears.
"I promise you I won't let that happen. I'm not losing you" he stated.
"Mystery Twins?" he put his fist up.
"Mystery Twins" Mabel half-smiled, fist-bumping Dipper.
After that conversation, Dipper processed carefully what Mabel had told him, and what he had promised her.
He wanted to protect her, but could he promise against the inevitable?
Probably not, but he would do what he could to fight it for as long as he can.
He wouldn't let anything or anyone take his sister away or vice versa.
But for some odd reason, whenever he was sleeping, disturbing, mysterious images would show themselves behind his closed eyes, sometimes even keeping him awake during the daytime when he was supposed to sleep.
Images of men dressed in black with guns, the sounds of his parents and sisters screaming for mercy and the horrifying image of his own death or Mabel's demise.
He could clearly see his Great Uncles backing away in fear from them both; feeling the warm blood drip down his own hands.
No!
That wouldn't happen....
Would it?
