Chapter13 – Fili's second letter

Dearmother,

Iknow you are angry with us for running away from home and disobeyyou. I promise we didn't want to. Kili didn't think it would bedangerous and thinks of it as an adventure and great fun, but I swearuncle Thorin and I will take care of him.

Formyself I have to admit I want this chance to prove myself. UncleThorin always has strict rules and sometimes I worry he doesn't loveme as much as Kili. I'm his heir and he has other plans for me anduntil now I never had a chance to show him I'm ready.

Mom,I also wish to get to know myself better. I know you want me to finda wife and start a family but I'm young and I don't know about MiddleEarth. All I know is our home but I've never seen Erebor.

Pleaseforgive me for wanting to see more and know more. There is alsoanother reason I'm writing this letter. I sit in a small house, ahobbit house, that belongs to Bilbo Baggins who will hopefully helpour mission because the wizard Gandalf says he is important.

Inever heard of hobbits before and neither has the lady I give thisletter to. Her name is Gilriel and even her name is elvish she isn't.Her parents were dwarves but were killed by the dragon Smaug. She haslost her home like you and uncle Thorin. She has helped Kili and meand is very kind but also stubborn. She reminds me of you.

Ipromised her to be welcomed among dwarves and that you will take careof her. I also promised her to come back and search with her for anyrelatives after I come back.

Ipromise you the same, mother. Kili and I will come back. I will safemy brother with my own life and no one will come close to harm him.

Thinkof us like we think of you. We miss you and when we come home we haveturned into men. Ready to start a life and family of our own.

Yourloving son, Fili
