Song Choice: Mercy by Duffy
His last words rung in my head as I hung up the phone.
"I'm going to make sure that you can never escape from me again."
What the hell did he mean by that? What could he possibly do to me to prevent me from escaping from him again? I shivered, I don't think I want to know; it was probably painful.
"If I know Tristan as well as I think I do, he'll probably bond with you." At my questioning look, she added, "sorry, I tried not to eavesdrop, but it's hard with vampire hearing and all."
I continued to look at her as she turned her face back to watching the road, "What the hell do you mean by that?" I asked.
"When a vampire bonds with a human, and it's almost always human since vampires don't tend to bond with other vampires, a literal bond is formed between the vampire and the human's life force."
"A bond between their what?"
"Their life force, Jessica. In other words, their lives become connected and if one dies, the other one dies too."
"How the hell would that keep me from escaping from him?" I asked.
"Because when you're bonded, he will always know where you are, what you're thinking and how you're feeling. Now, he already has the ability to know what you're thinking, but now you can at least attempt to keep him out, once you're bonded, you can't even do that. So, he will always know your thoughts and whether you plan to murder him or run away from him and if you do run, he will always be able to find you."
"Well, that's just inconvenient; not to mention very rude. What If I don't want to be bonded to him?"
"You really don't have a choice, Jessica."
Oh, well wasn't that just lovely?
"That is the most sexist thing I have ever heard."
"I know, but you don't have to worry... he can't get you where we're going."
"How can you be so sure? He just said that he was on our trail. If I'm not bonded to him yet, why the hell is he able to track me?" I asked as I threw the cell phone carelessly in the back seat. A moment later, it was back in my hands and I was staring at it as realization dawned on me.
"He's not tracking you with the phone, Jessica." Annabelle said, "He's using your scent."
"What the hell is he? A blood hound?" I asked, "How the hell can I get away from him if he can smell me anywhere I go? What the hell was the point of getting away from him if he could always find me by simply smelling me?"
"Jessica," Annabelle said calmly, "I already told you, he's not going to be able to find us where we're going."
I glanced toward her, "And, I already asked, but I'll ask again, how can you be so sure?" I asked.
"It's hard to explain; you just need to trust me on this, okay?" she asked, "I am taking you to a safe place where he can't get you or hurt you."
"But, he's on our trail right now."
"Jessica, trust me. We'll be safe before he catches up. Tristan is fast, but he's not that fast."
I wasn't entirely convinced, but I didn't want to voice that opinion since I would probably annoy her more than I always was doing.
"Okay," I said, rather reluctantly.
The car grew silent as Annabelle drove and I just stared out the window at the passing trees. It was so dark on that road that they all melded together and it was hard to see where one tree ended and another began.
