*Chapter IX*

She started crying in my arms. She pleaded with me to stay. Her eyes were swollen and she was shaking. I desperately wanted to stay. I was torn between the will and my best friend. It had been decided for me that I had to leave for the military by my father. I wished Zöe the best and left. I needed to keep in contact with Zöe. That's when I decided to write the letters. I had to go, but I wanted to keep in contact. Zöe meant everything to me...

Demetrius' thoughts about the past were interrupted when Zöe rolled over on the hard ground and she started crying in her sleep. Hearing her cry like that felt as if a hammer was striking the inside of his forehead with relentless ferocity, whilst a more acute sense of agony gripped the back of his head- as if someone were trying to burrow their way through his head. Zöe sprang into an upright sitting position. Woken out of a dead sleep she immediately and desperately wheezed "what's in the package?"

Demetrius puzzled responded "what package?"

She urgently replied " Persephone needed a package that you took.. what's in it?"

Demetrius quickly went to grab the package. as he opened the box he truthfully stated "I have nothing to hide from you, Zöe." He pulled out a gold ring. "I was waiting until I would ask your father for your hand in marriage... How did you two figure out that I had this planned?"

Zöe murmured "Oh Athena! He did this... he's okay. How could he have done this to me?"

Demetrius was still confused "Zöe who did what to you?"

"We have to leave, NOW."

Demetrius obediently packed everything light and essential and followed Zöe. They walked for what seemed like forever one day, two days, three, four. They stopped at a port and ate a real meal since they had been living on what Philipp had gotten her from the library.
