Chapter 39

~ Anna's POV ~

"Just let her sleep." I hear a female voice say. I'm too tired to open my eyes, so I keep them shut.

"It's 3:00, mom." I recognize Daniel's voice.

"Daniel, she just found out horrible news. She's probably exhausted. Give her some time, let her sleep." Esther says.

"Alright." He says.

I hear a door close, and footsteps coming towards where I was sleeping.

I feel a pair of lips on my forehead.

"I'm so sorry this happened." I heard Daniel whisper.

"Please lay with me." I whisper, slowly opening my eyes.

"Anything for you, love." He whispers.

He climbs in bed next to me and wraps his arms around me.

We lay there in silence.

"How are you feeling?" He asks.

"I don't know." I say.

"I'm sorry this ha-" He starts, but I cut him off.

"Daniel, please stop saying that." I say.

"Okay." He says.

"How did you know?" I ask him.

"How'd I know what?" He asked.

"How did you already know that Jonas and Jake were sending me the texts?" I ask again.

"Well, um.. the police station called me. I, uh took in your phone when you uh fell asleep and-"

"You took my phone without my permission?" I said, clearly getting upset.

"Anna, it was getting too far-"

"I don't care! I wanted to keep it to myself so me and my family would stay out of danger."

"You were going to be in danger either way! Can't you see that?"

"I could've handled it on my own, Daniel."

"Yes, because you were just sitting around, not doing anything about it. I helped you. Whether you want to admit it or not, I helped you. And we both know that."

"I didn't ask for your help!"

"I don't care. You can be mad at me all you want. It's my job to protect you. And that's exactly what my intentions were when I did it."

I let out a big sigh.

"I'm sorry. I just.. I guess I just wish you would've told me is all." I say.

"I'm sorry, too. I just want to keep you safe."

"I understand."

"Do you just want to have a lazy day?"

"Yes, please," is my response.

- 2 weeks later -

"Hey, Anna!" JJ, Daniel's little brother calls.

"What's up?" I answer back as I run into his room.

"Can you take me to get ice cream?" He asks. We've been hanging out a lot this past week.

"Sure. You want to drive?" I smile at him.

"Can I really?" He asks, eyes filled with excitement.
