When I finally reach my destination I park in the empty parking space of the school. I slip out of my car locking the car behind me. I enter through the front door and an old lady around her fifties is sat behind a desk typing furiously at the keyboard. She looks up when I walk in giving me a warm smile.
"Can I help you?"
I smile back adjusting my jacket handing her my enrollment slip. Her smile widens when she looks back at me.
"You have such a lovely name and your father use to come to this school, right?"
I nod my head avoiding her stare. Looking out the window.
"How is he? I haven't seen him in forever"
She says chuckling. My smile falls as I shuffle a bit. My throat went dry and I look down before forcing the words out of my mouth.
"He passed away 6 years ago"
I say emotionless and she immediately stops chuckling. Her eyes sympathetic and voice genuine.
"I'm sincerely sorry for your loss. Your father was a good lad"
I nod my head before she coughs awkwardly. She hands me back my enrollment slip getting out of her seat guiding me to a door which she tells me when I'm ready I can enter in.
I open the door and a man in his forties greets me and I hand him my enrollment slip. His smile grows big as he looks at me.
"You look like your father"
He says chuckling. He asks the same thing that lady asked me about my Dad and I repeat the same thing I told the lady feeling uncomfortable. He sensed the change in the mood and quickly changed the subject.
"Are you excited to start school tomorrow?"
I look at him questioning. He laughs at my reaction making me smile. He has a welcoming vibe and it's comforting.
"You got in silly"
He laughed flipping through my records an impressed look on his face.
"Already? But I just handed my enrollment today"
I shoot back confused. He shakes his head chuckling. Calming himself down.
"Since your father came here and all your other ancestors so you automatically get in. The Diamond family are always welcome here. Your family holds a legacy here and I would be damned if I didn't let you in. They are also my favourite people so don't tell anyone."
I chuckle as he gives me a playful wink.
"I thought there was no favouritism in this school"
I arch my eyebrow challenging him. He chuckles again and I chuckle with him. He hands me my timetable for tomorrow and I thank him. The smile never leaving my face.
"Ummm, sir what is your name?"
I ask and he smiles before answering my question.
"John Harper, but you have to call me Mr Harper"
I shrug my shoulders. Before he says another thing making me laugh.
"Stay out of trouble or being the rebellious family you are then that might not happen. If you need anything or get in trouble let me know and I will help you out."
I nodded closing the door gently. I walk out saying goodbye to the lady on my way out which I found out her name is Mrs Matthews. I smile and look at my timetable tucking it neatly into my pocket.
I unlock my car jumping in slamming the door shut putting the destination of Starbucks in. Starting the car I pull out of the parking lot and follow the directions.
I manage to get there in 6 minutes without any traffic. I am in such a good mood that I treat myself to a hot chocolate and a croissant. Still not satisfied I spot Mac Donald's further up the road and drive towards it driving into the drive-through.
I look up and it's the same woman who served Lucas yesterday. I smile and she instantly greets me in shock.
"Holy crackers. Nice ride"
I laugh and thank her, looking through the menu.
"Can I have two big Mac combos and 21 chicken nuggets, with a wrap, can you make sure that the chicken is fried not grilled, oh and can I have four cheeseburgers actually make that five and the flavour of the drink will all be coke, please."
I say seriously which makes her laugh.
"Who is all this for?"
She says typing into her keypad.
"Me"
I state, shrugging my shoulders. She looks at me stunned.
"What! Are you disgusted by my appetite?! If a girl gotta eat then she gotta eat"
I say a little harsher then I expected. She just smiles and nods her head.
"No, no, you are right I am just the same but I can't eat that much. I am stunned that you can eat so much but still manage to maintain a good figure. Please show me your ways. Is there anything else you want?"
I shrug grabbing my EFTPOS card.
"Well I'm a girl with a big appetite, and no thanks so how much do I have to pay?"
"€35 or $35. I can tell by your accent that you're not from around here".
I pay for my food thanking her before driving to the next window grabbing my food. Speeding out of Maccas with one hand on the wheel and the other grabbing a chicken nugget. Popping it into my mouth I bite into the golden treats as I sigh in pleasure at the crunchiness and tastiness.
I look at the clock it's 1:45 pm and I furrow my eyebrows in concentration thinking of where to kill some time. My Dad was from London but he met my mother when he went on a trip to New Zealand so I know my way a bit.
A light instantly clicks when I think of my Dad's house. He always told me about his getaway house when he was in his teens but he never once mentioned it to my mother. Taking a U-turn I speed off through the high way breaking the speed limit acting like I'm in fast and furious.
