Chapter 5

VALERIE

"I don't think I want to do this," I told Monica, as I held the phone between my cheek and left shoulder in order to cut veggies and onions.

I'd tossed and turned the night before, my gut telling me there was no way Eric would cheat on me.

But, what was he doing that day?

I'm sure he noticed, because he kept asking if I was okay. "What's bothering you, hon?"

He knows me. I don't toss and turn.

"Valley! Come on! I have a feeling about-"

"This is my marriage, Monica. Not a book. I'm sorry, but I'm not snooping around. What happens if we're wrong? Have you thought about that?"

I could hear her sigh. Then sigh again and again, "I was so looking forward to this!"

"We put people together for a living. If you want some excitement, put it into your job."

"Sounds easier than it is..."

"Anyway, how is Marcus? Are you two planning the wedding together?"

"...I think he, um... Is busy?"

"You think he's busy-"

"We haven't seen each other in like a week! I think he's cheating on me, Val..."

I looked over at the condo building, watchfully, "what's the plan?"

After a few seconds of silence, my eyes came back to Monica. "The plan, Mona?"

"Hm?" She asked, staring down at her phone.

I sighed, trying to keep calm. I was here, outside of her fiancée's private condo, for her. She almost helped me ruin my own marriage over suspicions she has about her own domestic issues.

Yet, here she was.

Texting.

"What is the plan with Marcus?" I asked her again, slowly.

Shrugging, she looked up at me, "we wait. He'll be back in a few. It's already..." She checked the time on her phone, "7:15 PM. Apparently, he won't be home for dinner tonight! So... We wait."

I inhaled, nodding slowly, "that's who you were texting."

"And playing Candy Crush." She pointed out.

I pulled out my water bottle, taking a nice big gulp and savouring the moment. I made a sound of satisfaction once I was done, turning my attention back to the residency.

We wait.
