VALERIE

"I left some pasta and sauce on the stove for you-... No, not bolognese... You don't need meat, Eric, you want it. Another time... Okay..." I looked over at Mona, who was lifting her right hand to her mouth, about to bite her nails. "I have to go, honey. Bye," I said to Eric, then hung up.

"Mona, no." I told her, reaching out and grabbing both of her hands.

She sighed in exasperation, "Val! Please! We've been here for such a long time! I'm so nervous! I need to-"

"Stop trying to revert into your bad habits. If I let you bite your nails, you'll complain to me about how they cost $150 to get done." You looked back out of the driver's window, then sighed.

"I'm going to let go of your hands and give you a stress ball." I told her, then did what I promised. As soon I released her hands, and I gave her a blue stress ball to calm her nerves.

"Thank you, Val."

******

"That was a bust," I sighed, taking a sip of my Vanilla Chai Tea as I drove back to Marcus' secret spot, reflecting on the past hour or so of rien. Nothing.

"I have a feeling this time, Val. We'll stay for 20 minutes, max. I'll pay for your gas?" Monica told me, putting her Caramel Latte into a cup-holder then biting into her blueberry muffin.

It was already 6:30 PM at this point, and we'd started at four. All I wanted to do was go home to my family. But, as someone in a relationship, I'd want support if my guy was cheating on me. So, I'm supporting her.

"Who do you eventhink it could be?" I asked her, parking in a discreet spot near the condo building. I looked over at Monica, her focus on the entrance.

"I don't know her, but I know of her," she said.

I nodded, "so, it would be a waste of time trying to explain."

"Yep."

I leaned back, pulling up a lever to recline my seat. Closing my eyes, I crossed my arms, "let me know if you see anything."

******

I woke up to an elbow stab in the right side of my abdomen and Monica squealing, "Val! Look!"

I resisted the urge to yell at her or scream in pain, instead turning my attention towards the building. There it was; Marcus with another woman.

Yeah, sure, don't speculate.

Would you speculate if a guy had his hand on another woman's... You know?

The two walked into the building, greeting the doorman with a smile, then heading toward the elevator. I felt like throwing up in my mouth.

"Mona," I whispered, turning my head with the expectation of tears, at least. But, that's not what I saw. She was smiling, beaming.

"Yes!" She exclaimed, giving me a high five.

"W- What?" I asked her, completely confused.

She grabbed my shoulder, squeezing it, "We're going to be rich!"
