Phil:

We where on my porch and I turned to Dan, he looked nervous. Great going Phil! You made your new mute friend nervous and uncomfortable, you just met. Ugh. I have good social skills but I mean sometimes I do rush things. I invited him over the day I met him. He could be a silent serial killer. Probably not but you never know.

"Hey Dan...don't look so nervous, I promise I don't come from a family of cannibals or nudists." I said to him. He laughed, very quietly, barely over  whisper, but it was there. My statement seemed to calm his nerves. I put my silver house key in the lock and turned the knob.

"Mum! I'm home." I shout from the entry way. Dan and I walk into the next room. The kitchen I see my mum baking muffins. I know how stereotypical that sounds, but she was. The smell was divine. Blueberry was my favourite.

"Hi Phil. I missed you..is this Dan?" She pointed over to Dan. He gave a small wave and smiled slightly. She waved back and her grin stretched ear to ear.

"Why..hello there Dan. My names Katherine, I'm Phil's mum obviously. How are you?" She asked him whilst still mixing the muffin batter. I could see the panic in his eyes.

"He's fine mum." I said quickly.

"Let him speak for himself dear." she said sweetly.

"He doesn't talk mum." I said glancing back at Dan who seemed to have his hands behind his back and looking down at the ground. Probably ashamed of himself.

"Oh. Well,I don't understand." My mum said confused but sweet.

"He's a selective mute. He doesn't speak. He communicates using sign language. He can hear you and everything he just doesn't speak. So you talk and he communicates using sign language. I'm planning on learning it so I can speak with him." I saw Dan's eyes light up when I said that. Or maybe he just had something in his eye. Who knows with him.

"Oh well I'm sorry Dan for my ignorance on your situation. I'll definitely remember next time." my mum says with a sweet smile. I'm happy this is all working out so far. I am thankful for my mother. She has always been so accepting and supportive of me and everyone who I'm associated with. I've always loved that about her. My mother's question then snapped me out of my thoughts.

"Dan, will you be staying for dinner?" she asked looking at Dan, he shrugged.

"Sorry Dan, you sent me a mixed signal. A yes or no is preferred." she asked him. He nodded. That answer seemed to sit well with her. She smiled back at him. He blushed and put his head down. He is so cute. She then started to laugh to herself.

"Whats so funny mum?" I asked. I mean can you blame me. You wanna say that if your mum starts laughing for no reason you wouldn't ask.

"Oh nothing. I was just thinking how cute Dan is when he blushes. He's such a nice young boy Phil...perfect boyfriend material for you." Oh my fucking god. She did not just.

"Mum! Shhhhhhhut up." My face was tinted red. With anger and embarrassment. I looked over at Dan. Who seemed to have a redder face then me. Didn't know that was possible at this moment.

"Oh Philly calm down. Like I said Dan seems like a nice boy, its alright. Right Dan?" she asked, looking at Dan. There was a suffocating pause, I turned to Dan. Having all these eyes on him I think was making him overwhelmed. He had panic in his eyes. He then nodded. Thank god.

"See Phil...its all okay. Alright boys well anyways. Go head on upstairs and I'll call you when dinners done. Oh and Phil, Martyn was home sick from school so please be quiet whilst passing by him room. Thanks." she said to us with a smile.

"Alright." I said turning away. I was still mad at her. But that would be a disscussion between us for after Dan leaves.
