Chapter Fourteen: William

Mom. That man. Academy. The thoughts rushed into my head as soon as I regained consciousness. I've been laying here for a while, unsure if I should go back to sleep or wake up completely. I went for the latter.

When I opened my eyes, I knew right away that I was not at home. The normal sky blue ceiling I was used to waking up to was replaced with a spotless, white one. I had painted my room's ceiling with my mother when I was seven, to make up for my lack of going outside. This was before I had a window, so I used to imagine that I was waking up outside, under the big, blue sky. I went rigid when I noticed that there was another presence in the room.

I sat upright and saw a guy sitting  near the bed. He was staring out of a window, as I have done countless times before. From this point of view, I could see that the male was tall and slim, most likely fit from the way he carried himself.  He was in a suit, which I thought was strange. I thought that you only wore suits to big or important events. All I saw was his back. From that, I could tell that he had black hair that reached the nape of his neck. His face was obscured from my vision.

"Ah, Miss! You're awake!" He said when he noticed me. I flinched, surprised by his eyes. He turns away.

"I'm  very sorry if I've startled you, Miss. If my being here is a nuisance, I'll leave immediately." I shake my head.

"No, no, it's fine. I was just surprised. I've never seen eyes quite like yours, you see." I explained, trying not to hurt this person's feelings for some reason. I don't know who he is, I realized. "Who are you anyways?"

"I am William, Miss. I'm here to.. protect you, in short. I'm just an Agent from a certain organization. I'll protect you with my life." I could hear that he said it sincerely, that he meant it. I could see it reflected off of his eyes. The left, which was a deep ocean blue, and the right, which was a liquid silver. What I didn't get was why.

I voiced my thoughts with, "Why, though? I don't get this..."

I pushed myself off the bed, and William was at my side in a blink of an eye. He carefully lowered me to the ground, as if I was some kind of precious gem. He let go of as soon as I was steady on my feet. The Agent made sure to keep a distance, too. Helping me, and then doing that? I shook my head, not understanding. "Strange.."

"Can you take me to that man?" I asked without thinking. William gives me a puzzled look for a split second before realization dawned on his features.

"You mean the Headmaster of the academy. Yes, Misstress, right away."

I frown slightly at the term. I've never been called that in my life, and I didn't want to start now. It just sounded strange, calling someone like me 'Mistress.' Before I could think about it, I said, "William, please don't call me that."

"Call you what, Miss? 'Mistress?'" He asked, confused. We continued walking down an empty, dimly lit hall.

"Yes, that."

"Yes, Miss." He replied.

"Not that either."

"What will I call you then?"

"Just Phoebe." I answered.

"But," He said started, "That would be incredibly rude of me, Miss." I frowned at his back.

"It makes me very unconfortable, though, William."

"I can't, Miss."

"Yes you can. Say 'Phoebe,' Fee-Be. Come on, it's not that complicated." I insisted.

"Ph-phoeb-be." William stuttered. It was almost really cute. I smile and laugh happily. "There you go. No more 'Miss' or 'Misstress,' okay?"

"Okay, M-Phoebe." I sighed, guessing that it was going to take him a while to get used to. We continued walking in silence.

Apparently, I was a "Frost." The man had told me that I came from a line of ice-users. Did that mean magic did exsist? I looked down at my hands in wonder. Did I have powers?

Only one way to find out.

How did it go in my books? Right, the characters in various stories all had to focus on their powers, what they wanted to make. I imagined a wall, like the one that blocked my path back then. My heart drops at the thought. Wall. Wall. Wall.

I heard William suck in a breath. Did it work?

I openened my eyes, just a crack. They widened. In front of me was a thick wall of ice, perfectly transparent like glass. I could see the boy behind it, staring back at me like I was amazing. If this was a supernatural school, than this should happen often wouldn't it?

William's lips started moving, and I could barely make out what he was saying. 'Break it down.'

I had forgotten about that part. I shut my eyes, and pictured the wall just... disappearing. Gone. Poof. Nothing.

I opened my eyes again and saw the wall, not melting, but evaporating. From top to bottom, the ice disappeared back into the atmosphere, probably as water or something. It didn't matter because I was so happy.

I did it!
