Once I was finished, I looked up to the judge, who nodded approvingly. "Defense, you may begin your cross-examination now," he said.
Mr. Devine nodded. "We will, Your Honor."
CROSS-EXAMINATION: ABILENE UMBER- THE DIAMOND WEAPON
-The diamond has been in my family for generations
-I was keeping it at the vault for safekeeping.
-It seems that this was a bad idea, though, as somebody tried to steal it.
-The diamond ended up being used in this case as the murder weapon, though.
-Even so, there is something that bothers me a little bit about the murder weapon being the diamond, but I can't put a finger on it...
"HOLD IT!"
"What do you mean?" Mr. Devine asked, tilting his head slightly.
"I don't know how to describe it, but the diamond doesn't seem to work as the murder weapon," I answered, twiddling with my hair nervously. "Does that make any sense?"
"Do you perhaps mean that... The diamond isn't sharp enough to be the murder weapon?" Chrysalis cut in, setting a gloved hand on the bench before her calmly.
"That seems to be about it... I mean, even if it's a diamond, the pointed end of it isn't the sharpest thing ever. I don't know if it would really kill somebody," I said.
"The culprit may have used some other weapon and used the diamond to make it seem as if that were the weapon, perhaps to hide their true identity," Prosecutor Wood suggested. "Y-you know, just an idea..."
"Was there anybody at the crime scene who sticks out to you as potentially having a knife, witness?" the judge asked of me.
I hesitated before nodding slightly. "Yeah... I don't know the name of the guy, but I'm pretty sure that I saw a knife around his waist..." I answered.
"What did he look like? Maybe somebody who knows the vault's workers could identify him for you," Chrysalis told me with an interrogative gaze.
I nodded once again. "Okay! Well, he had really dark brown hair and brown eyes. He wore a security outfit as if he worked at the vault. There was a stain on it around his neck, but I never caught his name..."
"Perhaps we should adjourn court to give us a chance to track down those at the vault with the appearance you just described," the judge announced. "Are there any objections from the defense or prosecution?"
The defense gave no reply. Prosecutor Burke looked to Prosecutor Wood, who shook her head in response.
The judge nodded, lifting his gavel from his bench. "In that case, court is adjourned for a thirty minute recess!"
//July 24, 2033. Defendant Lobby No. 1, 12:04 PM//
After court was adjourned, I decided to go into the defendant lobby where the defense team and defendant were. I could see T talking to somebody else. I think she said that his name was S.
I walked up to the pair, my hands in my jeans pockets. "Hey," I said simply, not all that sure at how to strike up a conversation. The next thirty minutes would be boring if I couldn't find somebody to talk to, but with the defense team whispering madly, T was my only option.
"Oh! Detective Umber!" T exclaimed in her heavily accented voice. "I didn't expect to see you here!" S glared as she spoke. My guess was that he was angry because I could potentially testify to her guilt when court went back into session...
"How are you holding up?" I asked of the blue haired woman.
T sighed. "I must say... I don't like how things are looking... But there is one thing that's boring to me," she admitted.
I noticed the defense team had stopped whispering and was now watching us intently before turning back to T and I's conversation. "What is it?" I questioned intently.
"That person that you described in court... Sort of reminded me of the person who arrested me in the first place," she admitted, rubbing the back of her head.
"Wait... The person Detective Umber described..." Mr. Devine cut in suddenly, his eyes wide.
"...Was the one who arrested you the night of the crime?" Chrysalis gasped.
"A little bit..." T confessed. "I know it's a small hope, but..."
"You just gave us all the evidence we need to prove that this unknown person was the culprit!" Chrysalis exclaimed, cutting her off suddenly. She shot Mr. Devine a grin, which he returned.
"What do you mean?" T asked in curiosity.
"If the person who arrested you was the same one Detective Umber described with a knife on his person, that means that he probably arrested you because he wanted to frame you for the crime and get it off of him," Chrysalis answered, eyes flashing with determination. "I'm sure that's it!"
"That would make sense... But how does that prove that I didn't kill the victim? I don't know if the judge or the prosecution will accept a theory as the truth without evidence," T frowned.
"Um..." Chrysalis muttered nervously, rubbing the back of her head. "W-we'll figure that out..."
"There you go again. Doing things without evidence," Mr. Devine sighed. Chrysalis sharply glared at him, making me laugh.
"What of it...? I believe in people, evidence or not..." Chrysalis told him, punching his arm lightly.
Mr. Devine took a step away from her, holding up his hands in surrender. "No need to fight, my lady... Besides, we both know your brother and Nevada will be angry if we start a fight..." he told her. Chrysalis rolled her eyes playfully.
"Defense! Defendant! Please return to the courtroom now!" came the cry of the bailiff from nearby.
"That's our cue," Chrysalis said, as if forgetting about her argument with Mr. Devine. "I'm sure that things will go well in there. If they don't... I'll buy you a pizza later, T."
"I don't know how a prisoner would get pizza from a visitor..." T muttered, but Chrysalis didn't care, already off for the courtroom.
