Sans leads the way back home walking ahead of me and Papyrus. Sans, being his usual self, keeps telling bad puns and talks about anything that doesn't require much effort.
"So," Papyrus leans next to me. "How did your date go?"
"I'm not so sure that was a date, Paps," I reply.
"Yes it was," he says. "Like you said, a date is when two people get together in order to spend time with each other with romantic purposes. That was what you did."
"I- No- I just- no."
"Nyeh!" Paps says louder. "I, the GRRRREAT Papyrus, know that you did!"
"Did what?" Sans asks looking over his shoulder at us.
"That she and-"
"Nothing," I say.
Sans chuckles. "You can't keep secrets from me, Freckles."
"Excuse me?"
"You absolutely adore me," Sans says as he faces forward with his hands in his pocket. I can tell there's a smirk on his face.
I feel my face getting red hot, my heart beating faster... as long as he doesn't turn around to look at me, I'll be fine.
"I do not," I reply. "I probably would, if you were a guy who worked harder and told good jokes, and moderated his ketchup consumption. But since you're none of those, I rest my case."
Sans chuckles again. "Whatever you say, Freckles."
I look over at Papyrus partially asking for help, all he does is smile brightly with a blush while holding two thumbs up.
We finally arrive at a cozy-looking home. I notice that beside it are two mailboxes, one of them clean and empty, the other one overflowing with unread mail.
"Sans, when do you plan on reading your mail!?"
"I'll do it later," Sans replies as he opens the door. He looks over at me. "Right now, we have a guest."
Sans gestures the door with his free hand without breaking eye contact with me. "After you."
I smile faintly and go inside, back into the familiar living room. This time, I can look at it a bit more carefully. It's actually a very nice place, with furniture, a chimney, a kitchen, two bedrooms upstairs; definitely not where you'd expect a skeleton to live.
"Welp," Sans says. "Ya know the deal, Freckles."
"What deal?"
"I don't know," Sans says. "You tell me."
I sigh, causing Sans to chuckle.
"I'm just kidding Freckles," he says. "Make yourself at home, you'll be staying here in the meantime. It's much safer and much cozier than at the inn."
"Oh," I say, feeling a slight bit nervous. Spending the night with them?
I just... I think I'm really starting to like Sans.
"You can sleep in my room, I'll just come invade Paps' personal space."
"Hey!" Paps yells.
Sans chuckles. "Just kidding, bro. I know you're bone-tired, that wouldn't be nice of me."
Another bad pun. Dah, so cute!
"Thank you, Sans," Papyrus says.
"So, anything else, Freckles?"
"Not really," I reply. "This is actually all very nice."
"Good," Sans replies and goes up the stairs and into his room.
