Chapter 12

"Cory, wait up!" Remus shouted, as he struggled through the throngs of students to reach the girl.

She turned as he caught up to her and tilted her head curiously. "What's up?"

"I need to tell you something," he said quietly, glancing around and grabbing her arm.

"Remus, wha-" she was cut off as Remus dragged her around the corner and into a broom cupboard. "Well...this is awkward," Courtney said with a slight smile as Remus hurriedly shut the door.

Remus took a deep breath to steady himself and turned to Courtney. "I know you're mad at Sirius right now, but please don't get mad at me for what I'm about to tell you." Courtney looked at him confused and gestured for him to go on. "Okay, well, the reason Sirius couldn't tell you what we were talking about is because it's my secret. And my secret is...that I'm a werewolf." Remus flinched backwards, as if expecting Courtney to either freak out or slap him.

But, she just smiled. "I've known you were a werewolf since third year," Courtney explained when Remus looked shocked by her lack of reaction to his confession.

"How?"

"I figured it out when you kept disappearing once a month. Also, I overheard you talking to James and Sirius about it," Courtney  said sheepishly, scuffing her foot across the ground. Remus nodded, relieved that Courtney didn't care about his condition.

They stepped out of the broom closet and were immediately bombarded by several sixth years from Hufflepuff. "What were you two doing in there?" one questioned curiously, glancing from Remus to Courtney.

"None of your business," Courtney snapped before stalking off down the hallway with Remus hurrying after her.

"Ooo, this is not good," a blonde Hufflepuff said as they watched the two retreating figures.

"Most definitely. Who knew Courtney Daniels would cheat on Sirius Black for Lupin?" the girls exchanged looks and rushed off to tell their friends about what they had witnessed.

"So, are you still mad at Sirius?" Remus asked as they headed up to the common room.

Courtney heaved a sigh and shrugged, "Yes. Just because you told me, doesn't mean I'm going to forgive him that easily. Sirius could have come and told me himself after getting permission from you."

"You can't stay mad at him forever," Remus stated calmly as they stopped in front of the portrait hole. For some unknown reason, the Fat Lady shook her head disapprovingly at the pair and clucked her tongue before allowing them to enter.

"What was that all about?" Courtney asked confused. Several Gryffindors noticed them enter and glared at them, making both wonder what they could have possibly done to obtain their wrath.

"Courtney Reese Daniels, you have some explaining to do," Lily said from by the fire. Courtney whipped around and saw the seventh year girls sitting there with extremely serious looks on their faces.

"Um...okay," she said hesitantly as she sat down in an armchair. Remus followed and sat down next to Marlene, who shot him a death glare and scooted slightly away. "So, what's going on?" Courtney asked when nobody spoke.

Lily sighed and stood up, "We heard that you two were caught snogging eachother in a broom closet on the fifth floor." Lily stayed calm for several more seconds before she exploded. "How could you do that to Sirius?! Just because you're mad at him doesn't mean you can go off and kiss one of his best friends! I expected better of you Courtney!"

Courtney looked absolutely shocked and suddenly burst into laughter. The girls exchanged looks, all wondering why Courtney was taking this so lightheartedly. "Oh, come on, you don't seriously think that I would snog Remus while dating Sirius? Yeah, we were in a broom closet, but Remus was telling me what they were talking about at the table and he didn't want us to be heard. Nothing happened, honest." She grinned widely at the shocked expressions on everyone else's faces.
