The following morning hit me like a ton of bricks. It was one terrible event after the next. I was having a horrible day.
I had no one to blame but me, though.
I had stayed up until God-knows-when last night crying over Harry and how I had screwed up, but also screaming because this wasn't just my fault.
I had set myself up for a bad day, that, I knew, since my first class began at six and I was fully aware, yet still didn't care that I was staying up way too late to get a good night's sleep.
"Earth to Sydney," Hannah snapped repeatedly in front of my face, which made me groan and widen my eyes. "You're so out of it today."
"Thanks," I really wasn't in the mood for our typical banter. I needed this last class to be over so I could get home and sleep.
"The professor isn't here today!" One girl exclaimed to the class from the front of the room. Everyone let out a cheer and we headed out of there, some running to their cars.
I walked slowly to my car, Hannah trailing behind me.
"Will said you dumped him last night?" She asked, her eyebrows furrowed. "Well, not dumped, because you guys were never really together, were you? But he said it felt like you were breaking up with him. He wasn't sure if it was a friend break up or a - "
"Let him know that it is a general breakup. That I am done with him. I'm sorry, but I can't focus on him when all I can think about every second of every damn day is Harry," I sounded so defeated. I was. I was so done with pretending like I didn't care about Harry. I loved him. I was sure of that. "So, yeah."
"Wait, what? Sydney, no. That's wrong, you can't do that,"
"Shut the hell up!" I yelled out, throwing my arms up in the air. I drew the attention of a few people who were milling around the parking lot, but I didn't care. "Stop fucking telling me what's wrong and what isn't as if your opinion is above mine or something. You can't tell me what's wrong and what's right, just because it's what benefits you!"
She had her arms crossed over her chest, looking a bit hurt.
"Don't fucking say it's wrong when my heart is telling me that it's right!" I hadn't realized I was crying until I felt the hot tears rolling down my cheeks. I was waiting for her to say something, but she remained quiet, so I turned to get in my car.
Then, "I'm the only one who has stuck by you through all the bullshit and this is how you repay me?"
That made me mad. I whipped around, feeling the anger coursing through my veins. I had to calm myself down or else I would end up saying everything in my power to hurt her, that's just how I was when I got mad.
"Don't act like the victim here, Hannah. From the start, you were trying to set me up with Will. Why? I have no clue, but I'm sure it got you some good hookups with his buddies or something, no? Sorry I don't like to lead people on like you."
The crowd that had surrounded us gasped audibly, eyes widening. Everyone who knew us on campus knew that we were the best of friends. We never argued, or if we did, we always made up quickly. We stared at each other silently for a couple seconds, before I rolled my eyes at her lack of reply and got in my car.
I drove with Ed Sheeran's smooth voice as my only companion.
"When I'm away, I will remember how you kissed me..." these particular lyrics reached out to me.
I was remembering when Harry had shown up at my door and planted an unexpected kiss on my lips. I hadn't exactly let myself enjoy, but I did remember the softness of his lips and how gentle he was.
I stopped the car, pulling over on the side of the road, letting others zoom by me, a lot of them honking in annoyance. I punched the steering wheel repeatedly, screaming and crying. The tears wouldn't stop streaming down my cheeks and I was so angry for being so damn weak.
Just then, my phone rang. I took a deep breath, before checking to see who it was. It was an unknown number with no location. I let it ring. It stopped a few seconds later, only to ring again.
I ignored the call a second time.
The third time had me fearing that something might be wrong, so I answered it.
"Sydney," a familiar voice breathed out, panic clear in their tone. "You need to get to London. Fast."
