"She's awake! She's awake!" Sydney's mother, Josie, couldn't believe this was happening. She yelled for a doctor, running out of the room, calling somebody - anybody - inside. "She's awake! My daughter's awake!"
A nurse came rushing in, quickly examining Sydney's body. With a smile on her face, she ran back out to get a doctor.
The doctor checked Sydney's heartbeat, took her temperature, checked her...well, everything.
"Is this really happening? Is my Syddie okay?!" Sydney's mom was in a state of shock. She momentarily forgot that Sydney hated that nickname. A nurse ran to her side, fearing that she would faint at any given moment.
"Yes, Mrs. Miller, it seems your daughter is doing well. She just woke up, so we have to give her some time," the doctor couldn't help but smile either.
Sydney had been in a coma for a little over a year, after a terrible accident involving a drunk driver unexpectedly made her press pause on her life. "I will have another nurse come in here and evaluate her mental state."
Sydney's mother smiled, unable to stop the tears from streaming down her cheeks. These were happy tears, though! These tears, along with Sydney waking up, were the only happy thing that had happened in a long time for the Miller family.
Sydney looked extremely confused from her place on the hospital bed. She opened her mouth, then closed it, only to open it again, her hoarse voice saying something her mother was unable to hear from her place a few inches away. Josie quickly shuffled to her daughter's side, taking her hand gently in her own.
"What is it, sweetheart?" She asked, rubbing her palm. "Are you okay? Do you need anything?"
"Harry," Sydney whispered, looking around as she attempted to sit up. She winced in pain and Josie pulled her back down slowly. "Harry."
"Who's Harry?" Her mother was quite confused. Her daughter had just woken up from a coma and the first thing she said was "Harry." Her daughter didn't even know a Harry.
"Harry," Sydney sniffled. "Sty..les."
"Sydney, come on, lay back, you need rest," her mother chuckled.
"Harry!" Sydney said his name louder this time, a demanding tone in her voice.
"Honey, Harry Styles? That boy from the band you're obsessed with? Why would he be here? He's a celebrity," Josie shook her head, her eyes searching Sydney's.
Sydney's face bunched up in confusion. Why wouldn't Harry be here? He was the love of her life. They had developed a connection unlike any other.
Then she remembered the accident he had gotten in! She suddenly needed to be by his side. She tried getting up again, but her mother pushed her down, whispering reassurances in her ear.
A nurse walked in a few minutes later, a clipboard and pen in hand. She had a wide smile on her face as she approached Sydney.
"Welcome back, beautiful!" The nurse exclaimed, leaning down to hug Sydney. Sydney did not recognize this woman, of course, but she had been the one to stay by her side every single night, praying for her to wake up. This nurse, Jackie, knew how much Josie was hurting for her daughter. "I'm just gonna ask you some quick questions to see where you're at, alright?"
Sydney nodded, comforted by this nurse's kind spirit. "Yes, okay."
"What's today's date?"
"It's November 27th, 2015," Sydney replied, her mother's face instantly losing its color.
"Are you positive?" The nurse pushed, immediately concerned.
"Yes. Where's Harry?"
"Who's Harry?" The nurse questioned.
"Why aren't you asking for Luke?" Josie asked, tilting her head in confusion.
"We broke up," Sydney's eyebrows furrowed. How did her mom not remember that?
"No you didn't, Sydney. You got in the accident on your way to his house to meet his parents for the first time. He felt so guilty, thinking that because of him, you - "
"What? But where's Harry?"
"Sydney! Stop being absurd! You have never met this boy, you've never talked to him! He's famous! He's a singer out in Hollywood or wherever the hell he is! Sydney, you are here, in Boston, you need to be in the present."
"Mom? Why are you being like this? Why are you lying?" Sydney had tears in her eyes. "Is it because he didn't make it? Did he make it? Damn it, where is he!"
"Sydney, you have never met Harry Styles before," Josie didn't know what was wrong with her daughter. Why was she making things up? "You have never talked to him."
"Josie," Nurse Jackie's eyes were wide. "I think I know what's wrong. Come with me."
Josie hesitantly detached herself from the side of Sydney's bed and followed Jackie out into the hall. She didn't have to wait long to hear what Jackie had to say.
As soon as they stepped out into the hallway, Jackie placed both hands on Josie's shoulders and sighed, "She was dreaming."
"Dreaming?"
"She was dreaming during her coma. Of that boy, most likely. And since it is all she has known for about a year now, she doesn't realize that it isn't real," Jackie had only heard about these situations. They were extremely rare. Patients never woke up thinking that a coma-induced dream was real. Hell, patients rarely dreamt at all during comas, or if they did, they never remembered a thing.
"What does this mean?" Josie asked, already crying over Sydney and what this would do to her.
"I truly don't know."
