"Are you sure you wanna go?"

Ava nodded her head for what felt like the hundredth time as she sighed in exasperation. "I'll be fine, mom."

Monty narrowed his eyes at the girl. Clearly, he wasn't in the mood for jokes. "I'm just looking out for you." He said as he shuffled around nervously, staring down at his boots while kicking at the ground. "And even though I don't want to believe it, there's a good chance that Jasper . . . didn't make it. I don't want to lose you, too."

Ava's hard eyes softened immediately as she gazed at the anxiety ridden boy. On the Ark, she was hardly assured that she was loved, and although that burdened her, she learned to deal with it. Hearing those genuine words tumble out of Monty's mouth made her troubled mind feel content.

Ava simply stared at him for a few moments, unsure on how to express her appreciation and adoration for him. Hesitantly, she took both of his clammy hands into hers, rubbing her thumbs across his knuckles. Monty glanced up in surprise at the sudden contact, his deep, brown eyes staring into her noticeably brighter blue ones. The corners of her lips twitched upwards into a small smile that unexpectedly reached her eyes for the first time since the news of Jasper.

"What do we have here?"

Ava and Monty yanked their enfolded hands away and hastily whipped their heads to see Murphy standing in front of them. As per usual, he was sporting his signature smirk that continued to widen at what he'd just witnessed.

"Heads up, Morty. This one's a spitter," Murphy warned.

"Uh, it's Monty."

"Yeah okay, Morty."

"Heads up, Monty," said Ava, accentuating on his name. Her head cocked to the side while her eyebrow shot up caustically. "This one's a total fucktard."

"Like I haven't heard that before," said Murphy nonchalantly. He began to pick underneath his dirty fingernails, pretending as though they weren't standing in front of him. "I'm going out with the search group for that kid, so I have a few orders from Bellamy that he wants done before we get ba—"

"I'm not taking any of his orders," Ava interrupted.

Murphy's head snapped up, almost in surprise, before narrowing his eyes at the brunette. His lips pulled into a sneer. "Excuse me? You'll do as he—"

"I'm coming with you."

His face immediately fell before a smirk formed on his lips.

"Oh, great. This should be fun."
