I lost track of time waiting in Mare's room. Her room was incredibly small for a silver, much less a princess. Evangeline's room was moderately sized but Mare's was so small it was insulting for me and her. Just because we weren't as important doest mean we should be treated as less. My room was a bit smaller. Everything that I had Cal's seemed to have twice the size. His closet, amount of thrones he would be sitting on, and now amount of significant others, if Mare could still be called mine.
I didn't care what their reasoning for doing this was, it wasn't fair. Cal wasn't playing fair, did you ever see me smiling at Evangeline or taking her for late night dates? He probably wouldn't even care, it's freaking Evangeline she wasn't interesting or funny. Not to mention she was a complete jerk. And The fact Mare went with him was upsetting. I don't know what her reasons might've been, but it was irritating me. I found my anger flowing in Cal's direction more than Mare's. He was taking my spark the only source of light in this hell whole that Cal would one day rule over. I didn't want it to get dark again. Just then the door creaked open to reveal a tiny figure slipping in.
Cal mentioned something about her being able to feel the cameras, while he was a bit creeped out by it I found it interesting. Hopefully, Hollen had done his job switching off the electricity to Mare's room. Apparently, Cal was right in her being able to sense the electricity flow, she made is half way to her bed before stopping.
The curtains ruffle a bit as I pass through them "Late night walk?" my words and smile are bitter. She was alone with Cal in a nightgown. That pleasure belonged to me.
Mare's mouth falls open, my first thought is she knows. "You know you're not supposed to be here" She sounds surprised. But she wasn't surprised when Cal showed up at her door, her prince in shining armor.
"Mother's men owe me a favor or two," Hollen counted as one of Mother's men, Right? I thought gesturing to the cameras. Mare's Cheeks flare. I was taken back a bit by the sight, they reminded me of bleeding roses. She looked better that way. Before I know it I've put one foot before the other, closer and closer. I had to see closer. She was blushing because of me? That's never happened before but for some reason, it made me happy"Sometimes I forget, I wish they wouldn't have to paint you up every day." She was looked so much more child-like with her red blush.
"That makes two of us" She murmurs.
I smiled at that thought the two of us. Or maybe she maybe by some sick chance she met Cal. Just the two of them dancing together last night. My smile ultimately fails. I feel like I should've Nominated Cal for target practice. "Farley made contact tonight" My fingers are shaking, Why didn't I nominate Cal? "You weren't here" Maybe her missing this important event, would from meeting Cal in the middle of the night.
"What did she say?"
I didn't exactly know what to say and I was a terrible liar, so I just gave her a shrug and began walking away. "She spent most of her time asking questions."
"Who?" Mare's eyes widen as if I've given up her name "Maven who did you give up?"
She sounds scared, did she really not trust me that much, I twist around. She must think I'm a monster "I didn't want to do it," (Yes I did) "But she'a right (Right?) Why can't sit still; we have to act. And if that means I'm going to give her people,I'm going to do it. I won't like it, but I will. And I have." I take a shaggy breath. I don't know why I feel like I have to justify myself to her, she was nothing without me. She was dancing with Cal. "I sit on the councils with my father, for taxes and security and defense. I know who will be missed be my-by the Slivers." It was hard to ignore the most liked people in the court, the people who stood out before everyone along with Cal, Father, and Mother. "I gave her four names"
"Who?" Mare asks for the third time, like an owl.
"Reynald Iral. Ptrolemus Samos. Ellyn Macanthos. Belicos Lerolan.
Mare releases a sigh, she really doesn't trust me does she, I would never put her or me in dangers way, and Cal to he's my brother after all. Thomas was more brotherlike, my head nags.
"Colonel Macanthos knew your mother was lying. She knows about the other attacks-"
"She commands a half legion and heads the war council. Without her, the front will be a mess.
"The front?" Mare's eyes bulge, why was she so nervous about that? Her brothers and friend were off the front for good. Plus Cal won't have to leave.
I nod once "My father will not send his heir to was after this. An attack so close to home, I doubt he'll even let him out of sight for the capital" I had a faint undertone of bitterness, Cal was still to be treated as a child, and he would be to the end of his days. One day he's gain wait and become a drunkey just like dad.
"Two birds with one stone," mare breathes. She'd trade four lives for the chance of Cal's death, and his definite absence.
"You're friends apart of this too." Kilorn was his name, they way he looked at Mare just a few nights ago had bothered me, they were so physically rough with each other yet emotionally gentle? It was weird. I launch into a wanmo of guns and such quite simple Red's shoot a couple people I get mom out of there before she barges into the minds of everyone and Mare turns off the lights
Mare's knees shake, but she steadies herself. "And what if we fail?"
"That won't happen" Because we wouldn't fail, she would. Mother wouldn't execute me right?
"Then we'll be traitors, both of us. Tried for treason, convicted and killed" They probably wouldn't put anyone on trial just execution. I could feel my blood pumping as Mare nods her eyes flicking towards her bed.
I find myself in the hallway. Taking shaggy breath
"Trouble Dear?" Mother asks coming around the hall glaring
