We spent the next weeks planning our escape. We always had to speak in hushed tones, so they wouldn't hear us.It would require a lot of effort on my part and quite a bit of acting. I was sure I could do it though.
Maybe.
When the bug day finally came around, I was as ready as I'd ever be.
Erika had just left. I was screaming my head off at Maxon. I yelled that he was enjoying her way too much, that he didn't even love me. "That's it, Maxon! I'm done! This is exactly what happened with Celeste! You won me back then, but not this time. Never again, Maxon!"
"Whatever, America. Leave. See if I care. Go run to that other guy. You're no better than me!"
I knew it was all an act, but it still hurt. Luckily, I could use a little hurt on my face. To make this more believable. "Maybe I will!" I retorted with as much rage as I could muster.
I turned away from him and banged in the door. "Somebody, let me out! I need to talk to Aspen." The door opened immediately. Two guards were standing there.
The bigger one said, "Stay with him. I'll take her to see the boss. Don't take your eyes off of him." His comrade nodded.
The first guard grabbed my arm roughly and I sensed Maxon tense instinctively. I prayed he would be able to contain himself and keep up the charade for a little longer. The man led me down a hallway.
I hoped Maxon had completed his part of the plan and wasn't far behind us. I didn't dare look back to check. The man opened a door to the right. It led to an all white room. There was a steel table and two chairs in the center. Other than that, it was barren.
The guard said, "Wait here. Mr. Leger will be here soon." I nodded and took a seat. I tried to keep up my image of just having a huge fight with fiancé and hating everybody. It was harder than it looked.
When Aspen came in, I stood up. I turned to the guard. "Can we talk in private, please?" I used the brattiest voice I could manage. He huffed and looked to Aspen. Aspen nodded and the man left.
Aspen looked at me and questioned, "What is it?" I let out an angry sigh. I did my best to sound frustrated.
"It's him, Aspen. He likes Erika way too much to love me also. He lies to me and everything he does ticks me off. I can't stand him any more, Aspen!"
"What exactly are you saying, America?"
"I'm saying I miss you. I miss us. I miss when things were simple. I loved you, you loved me. I want that back!" I lurched forward and kissed him. I had to swallow my disgust and pretend to enjoy it. I ran my fingers through his dark hair, just like I used to, and he gripped me tightly.
Aspen pulled back and whispered, "This better not be a trick, Mer." I wrapped my arm around his waist and I felt my hand brush the knife tucked into his waistband. I placed my hand near it. I brought the other hand to his cheek.
"It's not a trick, Aspen." I kissed him again and he didn't notice when I gripped the knife. I whipped out the dagger as fast as lightning and slid my hand from his cheek to over his mouth.
"Don't move a muscle," I ordered. "If you try to call for help, I'll kill you in an instant." I moved my hand from his mouth slowly. His eyes were filled with hatred. An evil smirk played across his lips.
"You look very sexy with that dagger, America." I scoffed and pursed my lips. His comment revolted me. "You said it wasn't a trick," he spat at me. I looked him straight in the eyes. They were sad and hurt, but I felt no sympathy. It's because of him that I was here. I replied to him sweetly.
"This wasn't a trick, sweetie. It was an escape plan."
