jonathan climbed onto the small ledge he could reach to nancy's room. he bet steve must have done this tons of times, to fool around with nancy. but he shouldn't be thinking of such things at this time, or ever actually. getting onto the roof jonathan gently knocks upon the girls window. he had basically self invited himself over, but nancy most probably did expect him to come over. perhaps not this late, but it was expected. yet still she surfaced one of her soothing smiles as she opened her window greeting the boy and a cold breeze.
"hey there jonathan," she greets him, "it seems quite cold so you should get in quickly." she said politely, without asking him what he's doing at her room window at this hour of night. he smiles, muttering a hello and swiftly moves into her room. where the weather was much less, breezy. she moves one of her books, where she was most probably studying from, aside to make space for jonathan to sit on her bed. he feels like he's intruded on her doing a project for school or homework."i'm sorry if i'm bothering you. i could always come back another time..." he tells her with concern.
"oh no, it's okay. just science stuff, and i'm decently good at that without studying."
jonathan nods as nancy smiles softly. "so why did you decide to visit me today, mr. byers?"
he lets out a gentle chuckle and meets her calm eyes. they seemed to glow with comfort and safety.
"i just wanted to make sure you were okay, you seemed a little more upset at school today." jonathan tells her shrugging, as if he barely even notices. when really, nancy is usually the highlight of his day. just seeing her, it's as if the weight of the world has been lifted off of his shoulders. but today, she just looked so upset. he had to come and check upon her. there's was no other way he'd spend his night.
"it's just that, the thing with barb is finally settling in. how she's gone..." nancy drones off. she was so strong, jonathan thought. up until this moment, and even now, she tried so hard to hold her head up. to not cry, jonathan saw right through her. he always did. back when she first started dating steve? he saw right through her back then as well. she was trying to be someone she wasn't to make this popular guy like her even more. jonathan always notices the little things about nancy. ever since their brothers had became friends, jonathan had always had that interest in her. she just seemed so special to him. like there was no one else in the world like her to him. everything felt, warm and safe with her.
"you need to be strong nance. it's going to be alright okay? i bet barb misses you as much as you miss her." jonathan finally replies to nancy as softly as he can. suddenly nancy pulls herself into his chest and quietly begins to cry. jonathan slowly brings his arm around her. and gently sits his chin upon her head. the one who could take so much before breaking had crumbled, and it was his job to be there for her. even if her so much of a boyfriend hadn't even noticed how different she had been acting today. jonathan byers had to be there for nancy wheeler. even she was too blind to see his love for her, he'd push it aside. he'd been there. always.
