(basically inspired by that one scene with ava and alex in greys anatomy, also ages in this have been bumped up to 19)

nancy and jonathan sat on her couch and nancy kept fiddling with her hair. she only did that when she was nervous.
"nancy? are you okay?" jonathan finally asks, after the long period of silence between the two.
"steve wants me to move to california with him!" she blurts out suddenly.
jonathan is taken aback, and swallows words that almost came out without thinking.
"well, d-do you want to?" he asks, not looking her in the face.

jonathan and nancy, they were like steve and nancy but without the whole dating factor. they were bestfriends, jonathan knew her better than anyone else. he knew her favorite songs, he knew her favorite 10 shades of blue (in order), her favorite outfits she owned, and so much more. steve didn't like this completely, but never spoke a word. he was scared to offend nancy in some type of way, but didn't care about jonathan at all. ever since the time will went missing, nancy and jonathan had gotten closer and closer. which wasn't surprising.

"I... I think so."
jonathans heart shattered. he couldn't let nancy know how much her leaving him would tear his life apart.
"steve, he's a good guy. he'll take care of you and you guys can have a great future in california." jonathan began to ramble.
"jonathan..."
"and did you know California has wonderful weather? it's very nice over there, sometimes chilly sometimes hot."
"jonathan..."
"they have great neighborhoods in california, and th beaches are very pretty to what I've heard. and-"
"jonathan!" nancy spoke up and jonathan finally stopped speaking to listen to her.
"my parents are fine with me going, they have great colleges over there, everything's perfect. there's no reason for me to stay." she told him, locked in eye contact.
jonathan swallowed. he felt his emotions scatter all over the place.
"well okay nancy, I mean, if that's how you feel I guess-"
"dammit jonathan!" nancy says shaking her head and looking away from her bestfriend.
"what? what's wrong?" he was so confused, so lost in this conversation.
"I need you... I need you to give me a reason to stay." nancy tells him with her voice cracking. her words sounds desperate and frustrated. "steve is a good guy, and I know he'll take care of me. but jonathan, you know me. you know everything about me, you're a great guy."
jonathan couldn't look at nancy. this was his chance to get the girl of his dreams. he could keep her with him, keep the girl he's been in love with since he can remember. but he couldn't. when he doesn't respond nancy continues to speak.
"so jonathan, please. give me a reason to stay here and not leave for california. give me a real reason."
at the end of her sentence she grabs jonathans face gently and pulls it to face yet once again. her eyes were wide and her cheeks were flustered. the tears sloway ran down as she waited for a reply, for a reason.
"steve, steve loves you. he's a good guy, and you know that."
nancys heart hurt as she spoke, "jonathan give me a reason." she demanded.
"you should go with him. you will go with him. I'll visit time to time, if I can." jonathan pretends to smile slightly, to make sure nancy wouldn't know how much this hurt him. "tell me when you're leaving so I can say goodbye to both of you." jonathan tells her before kissing her hand, and leaving the girl alone in her home.
"you were supposed to tell me that you were my reason!" nancy breaks down and begins sobbing. "you are my reason jonathan." she repeats over and over again, while shaking her head.

personally, jonathan hadn't thought he was a good enough reason.
