"bullshit."

"it's all bullshit"

"like we're in love."

steve jammed his foot heavily on the breaks and took a deep breath. he was drunk and shouldn't be driving, he knew that. but at the moment we didn't mind the consequences, he didn't mind the things that driving drunk could lead to. laying his head on the steering wheel he replayed the scene that had occurred at the party with nancy. he thought about how their entire relationship felt like a joke now, as if he had been the joke. his hands felt clammy and all steve could see was red.

"i thought she loved me, i thought nancy wheeler loved me." steve mumbles to himself out of despair. he put his head against the steering wheel and his mind flooded with possible reasons why nancy wouldn't have feelings for him like he did for her. he always treated her well, and constantly showed he cared. he never felt this way for any other girls, so he had always made sure nancy knew that. so it couldn't have been his fault. perhaps it wasn't him, and it was someone else. as soon as steve grazed this idea in his head, he knew.

it was jonathan.

it had always been jonathan.

the guy was so kind to nancy that steve had always found it difficult to dislike him, had gotten in the way of nancy loving steve. and when he thought about it, there was nothing steve could do.

as jonathan shut the door to nancy's room, he leaned his head against the wall. "what the hell am i doing?" he thought to himself. this was nancy. just a friend who he hung out with while the world almost ended. she was with steve. yet he was puzzled as to why steve had just left her at the party. neverless what had happened, jonathan brought her home due to her being slammed with alcohol, which is surprising because he'd never expect that from nancy. sweet... kind... beautiful nancy...

jonathan sighed and opened her room door again, just a tad. enough to see the girl sleeping soundly with her arm dangling off the bed. this caused a smile to form on his face. she was all he ever wanted. he made her feel alive and when he was with her, the whole world seemed to appear brighter. after the incident last year, he'd convince himself that he only felt attracted to her because of the rush they felt nearly dying together. but here he was, a year later feeling the same rush even though the world was not ending.

but he wasn't allowed to feel that rush. jonathan quietly shut the door back closed and made his way down the stairs. mrs. wheeler looked up from the couch and said,

"thanks again jonathan, you're a good guy."

jonathan slightly smiles and responds with, "no problem mrs. wheeler."

"have a good night!"

he opened the front door and made his way to the front yard of the wheeler's. the night air was chilly, but not uncomfortably cold. as jonathan walked over to his car, he witnessed another car pull up tht seemed quite familiar. as it parked, jonathan watched as steve climbed out and shut his door. steve was probably looking for nancy, best case scenario was to check up if she was okay, worst was to yell at her. either way, the night would end peacefully if jonathan simply advised steve that nancy had already gone to bed and the best thing to do was to wait until tomorrow to have any conversation with her. with this idea, jonathan walked over casually to where steve was still standing behind his car door, staring at nancys window. steve couldn't have been able to see jonathan's car from where he was, or perhaps he was just too focused, or drunk.
