"Kate..........Kate, time to get up..........Class is gonna start soon come on.." A young blonde says poking the peacefully sleeping Kate. "Ugggggghhhhhh...... five more minutes." Kate responds. The blonde soon gets impatient and hits Kate with a pillow. "Ugh! FINE FINE! You win Artemis." Kate says rubbing her eyes.
Kate and Artemis were only eight years old, but were roommates in the Mage academy. A very high class school that put out some of the best mages in Alaina. They had kids from every age, even some infants that were left on the front gates.
"Phoenix. Time to get up." Kate says rubbing the bird's tiny head. The one thing special about this bird is that it is a phoenix. The birds are common in Alania as the are mostly in the sun kingdom. "I'm getting up...." Phoenix says stretching his arms. Once everyone was ready they headed out the door. "I wonder what we'll be doing today?" Kate asked as her and Artemis walked down the hallway into their class with Phoenix on Kate's shoulder. Artemis stares ahead as she responds "Training." The two girls and Phoenix entered their classroom to be greeted to their teacher Dawn. She taught everything from math, history, science, even magic control, but not physical combat. Dawn was in her late 20's with long red hair and blue eyes, with her signature lab coat and boots.
"Ok class, please take your seats and let's began." Dawn said in her usual cheery voice. "Today we'll be focusing more on magic control. As you all know us Mages play a big part in Alania, we protect those who can't. And if you're as high level like me you can even become a professor and spread the teaching of magic to those younger than you." Just as she finishes a girl in the front raises her hand. "Yes Layla." Dawn asks. "Is it true that light mages are the strongest, and are the most likely to become an elder?" Layla asks. Layla comes from a very successful family of light mages and is the honor student in every one of Dawn's classes. Layla had medium brown curly hair with magenta eyes. "Yes you are correct Layla. But now let's stop taking and head over to the training room." Dawn says as the class gets up and head over.
The academy was very large so it took a few minutes but once we got to the training sector we saw that the room next to us was were the older kids were in physical combat. The training sectors were big rooms surrounded by indestructible glass so that whoever was on the other side could see from any angle. In the room with the older kids was professor Jacob, head of combat training. Known to be the best swordsman in all Alania. He did get along pretty well with Kate, he even stared to train her in swordsmanship.
"Ok now lets began with the exercises you've been learning." Dawn says. As everyone spreads out while Dawn walks around the room to check on everybody.
Layla was the center of attention as she started to use her magic to levitate objects and move them to different places. She was already level 5 which was very high considering everyone else was only level 3. Next to Layla was two other students, a cat-hybrid girl that could control life energy. She was working with small plants to absorb their energy and give it to a dying plant. The other was a boy with blonde hair and green eyes. He had the power of strength which made him a good fighter.
Behind everyone else was Kate and Artemis. Phoenix usually stayed with Dawn during class since he wasn't allowed to interfere. Kate and Artemis were hard to figure out what their magic was in the end the only figured out Kate could control fire, while Artemis could spawn in a bow from almost nowhere. They where practicing more on how to summon their power the whole day.
"Well you two are getting a lot better!" Dawn says as she walks up to the girls. "Kate is a fast learner." Phoenix adds in.
"Aww why thank you little buddy!" Kate replies petting Phoenix's tiny head. "And Artemis your archery skills are improving by so much. I can see you become a great archer." Dawn says patting Artemis's shoulder. Artemis responds by nodding her head slightly. Soon enough the class ended and it was time for lunch. As they exited the training room Kate ran into Jacob.
"Hey kid." He said in his same deep and raspy voice. "Hey Jacob!!" Kate and phoenix both said. "Did you do well in training?" He asked bending down to her level. "You bet!! I've been getting so good at controlling my magic! I cant even make shapes out of flames now! Huh Artemis!" Kate says excited looking to Artemis as she only nods. "That's good and have you been practicing with your sword?"He says. "Yup!!" Kate replied. "Heh, then you got everything going for ya kid. Keep training and you might be as good as me. Here." He hands Kate a book saying Human Behavior and Battle Strategies. "Read this a few times and it should help you in combat. I studied the whole subject and now look at me." He laughs a bit then pats her head and sends the two girls off. Leaving only him and Dawn.
"You act as if you were her father? You must really care for her." Dawn says. "You know what she's gonna go through once she's old enough to leave?" Jacob says as he watches the girls go farther away. "I wish we could tell her now, about her mother, her kingdom. But you know why we can't." She says putting a hand on Jacobs back." I know you were really close to Alicia but-" "Dawn stop." Jacob says looking into her eyes. "I want to make sure Kate gets to be just as strong as her mother, stronger than anyone one else even me. I want to make sure that she lives a good life and gets to live through all of it. Besides no one even knows who her father is, maybe he's dead like her mother. Someone has to be a parent to her." Jacob says. "Jacob...." "Ughhh whatever, I just need a beer my head is killing me now."
