Fred let me sleep in the next day and by the time I’d woken up he’d dressed the triplets (in normal clothes), fed them and got them ready so that, when I’d finished dressing, we could go straight out to meet Harry, Hermione and Ron. We ended up eating in the Leaky Cauldron before heading over to the joke shop so that the others could browse through the merchandise.

I never intended to leave the shop but Harry had different ideas; he seemed to be under the impression that Draco was working for Voldemort and nothing that anyone could do or say would persuade him otherwise. We ended up following him but, in Harry’s rush, I was forgotten and I had to guess which way they’d gone and ended up in a place I shouldn’t have.

“Does it work?” Draco asked.

I was hiding under the window of a shop Draco had just gone in.

“Yes but its twin doesn’t.” A voice I didn’t recognise replied.

“Then I’ll fix it!”

“That’s all well and good, Master Draco, but only if you know where it is.”

“Of course I know you idiot!” Draco spat “otherwise this piece of junk would be useless to me! My father will be down to pay for it at some point but until then, tell no one I was here or I’ll have you cursed.”

“I understand.”

“I assume you know of the plan?” Another voice spoke after a moment of silence.

“Yes” came Draco’s reply “The Dark Lord wants me to kill Dumbledore.”

“And you have a plan yourself?”

“Stop asking questions!” He snapped “of course I do, otherwise I wouldn’t be here!”

“May I ask-?”

“No, you may not.” The door swung open and Draco stepped out “don’t be hassling me about it” he called back into the shop “or I’ll curse you myself.” I tried to wish myself invisible and merge into the darkness but it didn’t work. Draco saw me. “What did you hear?” He snapped.

“Everything” I replied “Draco, you can’t do it!”

“I can and I will” he hissed “I know that you’re my sister” he said as he stalked closer “but you’re in with Snape and I know that Dumbledore trusts him for some reason. I can’t have you running off to him and telling him everything that you’ve just heard. The Dark Lord will kill me if I don’t do this.”

“Draco” I almost begged as I backed away from him “you don’t have to do this, I won’t say anything!”

“I can’t take that risk” Draco replied as he pulled out his wand.

I stared at him. I don’t know what he was going to do to me but I wasn’t going to go down without a fight. “You’re selfish” I stated “you care more about yourself than you do anyone else. You have your own brain, Draco, you can choose not to go through with this but you won’t because you’re a coward.”

“I’m doing this for you!” He shouted “what do you think will happen when people find out you know what the Dark Lord has planned? Do you think that The Dark Lord or his Death eaters will let you live?”

“You’re a death eater now” I told him “you’re one of them whether you like it or not.”

Draco rubbed his left forearm and grimaced “maybe you’re right, maybe you’re not, but this thing that I have to do is going to happen whether you like it or not. Do you want to know why?” He smirked horribly at me.

“Surprise me” I spat. I’d backed myself into a corner, I was wandless and, therefore, defenceless.

“Dear old Severus Snape has made the unbreakable vow with my mother” he explained “if I fail to do this mission then he will do it for me. I know that he just wants to take all of the credit but, either way, dear old daddy has agreed to kill Albus Dumbledore if I don’t.”

“What?” I breathed. My heart felt as though it had stopped and taking a breath seemed almost impossible “you’re wrong!”

“I was there; they didn’t know that I’d followed them but I saw it happen but none of this will matter to you because you’re not going to remember this conversation. In fact, I’ll be surprised if you can remember who you are in five minutes.”

So he wasn’t going to kill me; he was going to take my memory and there was nothing I could do to stop him. “Don’t” I begged “please; I have people who need me, I have-”

But he cut me off and my panic seemed to have made me temporarily deaf; I saw his mouth move but heard not words before I was hit by a flash of light.

“Lilly, for Merlin’s sake, what are you doing down there?” The voice sounded distant and echoed around my head.

I opened my eyes and looked up to see a shadow peering down at me “did it hit her?” Another voice asked.

“Who were you just with?” I looked around to see a girl with bushy brown hair kneeling beside me.

“I-uh-” who was I just with? I couldn’t remember for the life of me where I was or what I was doing here or anything actually.

“It hit her” the girl confirmed. She sounded disappointed. “We need to get her back to the shop; Molly will know what to do.”

Two pairs of hands hauled me up and I took a good look at the first person who’d spoke. He was wearing glasses and he had a weird scar on his forehead “who are you?” I asked feeling as though I already knew him but couldn’t place his face or his name.

“Snape is going to kill us” the boy moaned. “Come on, hurry up, maybe there’s some kind of counter spell.”

“But Lockhart-”

“Ron” the boy snapped “this isn’t helping!”

“Well maybe if you hadn’t been so caught up in following Malfoy then we wouldn’t be in this situation right now!” The girl snapped at both of them. “Now come on!”
