CHAPTER 07

Hearing Harley's psychotic and masochistic cackles along with the air whistling dramatically as they descended, Maggie felt as if the devil was already caressing her soul, just waiting for the perfect moment to snag it. If the crash wouldn't kill her, cardiac arrest would.

Maggie tried to sit nonchalantly and she shut her eyes, as the criminals and Flag thrashed about, panicking.

"Six-one is going down!"

"Six-one is going down hard!"

Maggie abruptly sucked in breath as the plane made its deadly descent upon concrete. A frighteningly audible crash blasted in Maggie's ears and she held on to her seat tightly. Pillars of smoke burrowed from the carcass of the plane, and Maggie unconsciously squeezed her eyes shut.

Am I already dead?

Maggie felt a harsh pat on the shoulder and - mistaking it for the devil - she screamed like a banshee. When she stopped her wailing shriek, giggles and chuckles sounded. Maggie instantly snapped her eyes open and eyed the group, who was staring at her amusedly. Her eyes darkened with annoyance as she stood up and powered through the group.

"Oi! Don't go having a temper tantrum now!" Boomerang laughed.

Maggie rolled her eyes in sheer irritation as the other squadron tore the door away, Maggie being the first to hop out. "Kiddie's having a tantrum," she heard Harley whisper to Floyd, who muttered back,

"Leave the poor kid alone."

Flag jumped down the remains and assessed the situation. Maggie stood frontline but lagged behind when they started walking, perturbed by the situation of Midway City.

Rubble decorated the dusted pavement, and debris clung like superglue to the chipped cement. Fire licked the air, added with the poisonous fumes from the crash, it didn't feel like a typical terrorist attack - it was a city under siege.

"Mind games," she heard a hushed tone, and ahead of her, she saw Boomerang conversing quietly with Slipknot. She quickened her pace and cut between the two. Slipknot eyed her but then replied to Boomerang,

"What's that?"

Boomerang grinned at the shorter girl briefly. "All this bomb in the neck crap. It ain't real mate," he supplied Slipknot, who seemed to grow curious of Boomerang's intentions. "See, they're trying to trap us in our own minds, yeah? Well if you look around, we're free bro."
