CHAPTER 09

Maggie looked away, eyes hooded and gloomy. The fight had faded and its exuberant vibes had shrivelled away. The enemy numbers had been reduced drastically. Sighing, Maggie got up. She glanced at her current minions before she trudged away, the last command slipping from her mental and sliding into the monsters.

A vicious roar ripped through, and immediately the smell of rotted flesh wafted and hung in the air. Maggie scrunched up her face, gasping when a gooey head rocketed inches away from her hair. She glanced over her shoulder, a comically gruesome scene behind. One of the monsters had been decapitated, whilst the other had something resembling an arm embedded in his chest.

Brutal. Yet, Maggie felt no remorse. She didn't even know what they were, and if they had families? They'd tear them apart. Not something to mope around about.

A feral howl echoed hauntingly, and Maggie was stricken when a wave of nausea when an all-too familiar voice screamed in a mix of desperation and fury. Turning, she widened her eyes when she was met with quite a scene: Rick Flag had been toppled over the cap of a car, a group of creatures pounced, trying to get a generous chunk of flesh from the colonel. Deadshot hurriedly sprinted over, callously shooting the creatures and tugging them away from Flag. His eyes searched the area and they fell upon Maggie.

"Kid! He dies, we all die!" Harley came in the scene, and he called for her too. Maggie heaved a heavy sigh and was about to spring into action, when her conscience dragged her into doubt.

What would matter if you died?

'Nothing. But what about the others?'

They're all guilty criminals. The world would fare better without all of you.

So she stood, and watched as Harley whacked the monsters and Deadshot shot them. She merely inched forward slightly, but decided to stay out of it. If they managed to rescue Flag, then excellent. If they didn't - her conscience already cleared away any fear of dying.

"Hey kid! We could use a little help over here!" Harley exclaimed, bouncing off the car and ramming her bat onto incoming monsters. Maggie fidgeted quietly.

"Kid! Your whole life is at stake here!" she yelled again, but Maggie didn't move and inch. She folded her arms and dropped her chin, trying to block out Harley's voice with an incessant buzzing noise her mind produced.

"Oh, I get this!" Harley said, as the last creature had been dealt with. Deadshot helped Flag to his feet before they began sniping another incoming wave of monsters.
