Chapter One

☆Jordyn's POV☆
~
"Daddy, can we paint our walls pink?" Celia asked at dinner. It was the day after they had gotten back from their honeymoon. So far, I had gotten away with being unnoticed since Jake had occupied everyone and took them ice skating.
"Yeah, hot pink is this month's trendiest color." Jessica agreed.
"What are you gonna want to paint it next month then?" Nathan asked, making Celia and Jessica glare at him.
I shoved my forkful of food into my mouth, keeping silent. My room was the attic. I actually really loved it. No one bothered me, I could play my music as loud as I wanted, and I could sleep all day on Saturdays and no one would notice.
"Would you like to paint your walls, Jordyn?" Dad asked me. I hadn't even realized he was talking to me until I looked to see everyone at the table staring at me.
"Uh, no thanks," I murmured.
"Why not? They're so ugly." Karen hinted. I ignored her comment and shoved another forkful of food in my mouth.
"Seriously. How do you live up in that attic, Jordyn?" Jake asked me.
"You should have moved in with me and Jess," Celia said. "You'd love it!"
"I'm good." I said quietly, getting up and taking my dishes to the kitchen.
I had a ton of homework to do which I was not looking forward to and it was already almost eight. I'd never get it done.
"Jordyn? Are you okay?" I heard his accent and immediately knew who it was. I spun to see Nathan standing behind me.
"What do you mean?" I said more harshly than I'd intended.
"I see the way John- I mean dad- talks to you. The way Celia and Jake look down at you with pity. Why do they do that?" He asked with pure curiosity.
"Because I'm stupid." I replied without meaning to. Nathan didn't care. He never did. From the moment we met he barely acknowledged me. But now we were technically siblings.
"What?"
"They treat me like I'm some sort of disease. I have dyslexia and ADHD. My family pities me. They ignore me and praise Celia instead."
"Jordyn... I'm so sorry..." he said.
"Don't be. I don't care. The minute I turn eighteen I'm out of here."
"Come with me," Nathan said, grabbing my hand and pulling me outside. He kept pulling me down the driveway as I struggle to make him stop.
"Nathan, what are you doing?" I demanded, finally yanking me wrist from his grip.
"Going for ice cream." He said with a crooked smile.
"Won't people notice you?" I asked.
"So? Come on, I want to spend some quality time with my stepsister." He explained.
"Since when?" I muttered; following him nonetheless.
"Why do think the whole world is against you? Jordyn, you're beautiful and you have so much potential. It isn't your fault your family isn't supportive."
I was silent for a moment. Nathan cared?
"Teach me how to read. I've failed many classes because I cannot read correctly." I said.
