The stationary train car creaked in sync with the midnight breeze. No one even realized I was still awake. Dylan and Alex were laying on the bed above Trix and I. I was burning with the heat of Trix laying across my legs.
Bellatrix Quill, our local 9 year old brat, was laying completely over the end of my legs, stopping me from moving. She typically does this, and I usually don't care, but I today I really, really wanted to get out of this heated metal bullet of death.
"Hey. Hey Trix," I whispered. With that, Trix's pink, curly hair turned as white and straight as an arctic rabbit's. I must've startled her. She lifted her head, and I pulled my leg out from under her. I As she started to wake, I dashed toward the ladder that led to the roof. I'll probably get enough bickering from her about that tomorrow morning.
The hatch opened as I pulled the switch to release the lock. Fresh autumn air rushed into the silver train compartment when I climbed up onto the roof. The sky was dark and littered with stars. Not living near the city, the stars sparkles in their true potential. As I looked into the sky, I realized that the stars were us, "The Invertants." We shine outside of community, but in dense population many of us are shunned.
An explanation is needed in this situation. In the year 2075, mutations started to form in children. They rarely ever altered appearance but rather the brain. It made then have extraordinary abilities which could be used for good or evil. The deadliest of us were shipped off to a prison by the Order. The Order is the international "protection" for the world. They are, for lack of a better term, powerful bigots. Actually, that's the perfect term for them. As you can tell due to Trix's hair, we have these "abilities." I can't be hurt by any physical means even though I still do feel pain. Let's say if I were to jump off a building I would be in severe pain, but I wouldn't have a scratch on me. Since we don't have deadly power, we were left in society on our own, abandoned by our families and friends. We were hidden by Mr. and Mrs. Artemis, the parents of one of us Invertants. They took us in after too many judge-filled looks toward us.
The sound of jets hit against my ears. Panic rushed through me as I jumped down the hatch onto the carpet floor. I ran over to the bed where Dylan was sleeping and tapped her on the left arm. She awoke with a gasp, the black beanie covering her eyes fell off her head.
"Code Red," I whispered. She rushed over to the wall and put her hand to it. Neither of us were surprised as the subway car and everything inside it turned completely invisible, unnoticed by the human eye. The jets continued to rush by until, about two minutes later, they were out of earshot. Dylan dismissed the invisibility of the train car.
"Dude, can't you just learn to do this so I can sleep," she barely managed to say as she fell back on her bed. I felt as if I'd had enough to stress about for tonight. I fell back down onto the floor and went to sleep.
