The constant sound of footsteps filled our ears as we made our short and dreadful walk to our certain doom. The sun beating down on us, we slowly walked to the military base. Isabeth wasn't even looking up. She was tapping the screen on her tablet, most likely telling Mrs. Artemis what was happening. We were all in utter silence. No witty jokes from Dylan. No corrections from Isabeth. We were all thinking terrible things and worse. We all decided to stop and take a break before we got to the base.
"Do you think-" said Isabeth, worried.
"No way," Dylan said.
"But what if-"
"It couldn't happen," I tried to reassure her, but I didn't even believe it. I laid down on the rough ground, trying to find some time to stop stressing, when suddenly Isabeth's tablet buzzed and beeped very loudly. I quickly leaned back up to see what the problem was. Isabeth and Dylan were hunched around her tablet, focused on whatever filled the screen. The beeping continued for another few minutes until something strange happened.
A blue flash of light blinded the three of us as two figures appeared in the light. Alex and a boy with wings appeared and started walking towards us. We all backed up, confused.
"Alex!" Dylan yelled. She ran up to him and hugged him as tight as she could. "I'm so glad you're back, but-" she slapped him across the face, "that's for leaving us."
I will never understand women. I walked up to Alex and this strange person who I've never met before and asked, "Who's you're new friend?"
The two explained to us what happened when Alex had gone missing. Long story short: Alex went on a soul searching mission but came back with a lot more soul then he'd been searching for. I hadn't seen him this happy in a long time. I bet he was finally happy that he could help, even if he didn't have any powers.
"Well, not to be rude, but what does this have to do with us specifically," Isabeth said.
"Well, we kinda need your help," Alex said. "We'll explain everything when we get back to HQ."
"But Mr. Artemis is in there," I said. "We have to get him back." We couldn't let Artemises down after all of the great things they'd done for us.
Ram decided to speak up. "Sorry but... uh... going into that military base is a terrible decision. There are hundreds of Order guards crawling that base. If you're going to storm that place you're going to need some back up."
"And fortunately we know just the people," Alex continued. "But we need your help first."
"Okay," Dylan said to Ram before anyone could respond, "but you have to promise that you'll help us get him back."
"Uh ye-yeah sure," he responded. "I-I promise."
That didn't sound very convincing. But what are we gonna do? Make him promise to promise. I'm sure Dylan would be thinking the same thing if Alex weren't here, but if she trusts him, then I guess I have to for now.
Ram told us all to connect our hands and we all saw the same flash of blue light that appeared when Ram first teleported here. For a moment I felt my stomach churn, but everything settled after a couple seconds.
We were standing in a big and open white room with some people we've never seen before. A guy in goggles looked up and waved at Ram and then went straight back to welding.
"Welcome to HQ, a place where we fight the Order and the Phoenixes from um... doing bad things," said Ram, unconfidently.
A blonde girl poked her head up from a book she was reading and said, "Wow... 'bad things.' Great sentence Ram. Really shows your great vocabulary." She had sort of a northern accent.
"Do you really think so?" Ram said, not quite believing her.
"Obviously not, Ram," the boy in the goggles said, "that's something we call sarcasm." The boy looked, or more like turned, toward us. We couldn't even really see his eyes thanks to the goggles on his head. "I'm Diesel and as I've already explained to Alex that sarcastic ball of knowledge over there is Adela and the guy over there on the computer is Twitch."
"As much as we'd like to stay and chat, we kind of have to get Mrs. Artemis, Vince, and Trix," I said, trying to move the situation along. We must've been silent from their texts or calls for awhile. Mrs. Artemis must be pretty worried.
"Don't worry, we've got that covered," Alex said, confidently. Then, with another bright blue flash of light, both Alex and Ram disappeared. Isabeth, Dylan, and I all quickly covered our eyes.
"You get used to it," Diesel said, returning to whatever he was working on.
