Concentrating on the assignment at hand was becoming increasingly difficult as my thoughts kept drifting to the great mistake I made more than a week ago. It was a saturday at the office and that usually meant a quiet afternoon for me, but things have been busy around here and days without Harry have been plentiful so there was no one to really spend my afternoon with.

Connor has been busier than usual lately, so even if I wanted to spend more time with him, I couldn’t. I felt lonely without Harry; I longed for our long conversations about the simplest things and ached for his touch. As my finger began tracing the places his lips have touched my phone rang, pulling me out of my trance. I jumped and quickly reached for it, “Hello, this is Ellie.”

“Elizabeth?” the familiar voice asked through the receiver.

“Yeah, hey Connor...” a small bit of me was disappointed at who the caller came out to be

“Sorry, I thought it was someone else when you said ‘Ellie.’” he chuckled.

“Mhm...” I stared at my newly polished nails. There was a lingering silence as both of us waited for one to say something.

“Why’d you call Connor?” I guess I’ll start the conversation.

“Well, I was just in a meeting and we were talking about some plans, hold on a second.” I heard another man’s voice call for him. I imagined Connor in a meeting, his blond hair slicked back and his full attention on the speaker; the thought of him in a meeting isn’t so far fetched, but the thought of him giving his attention to someone else that long made me giggle.

“Elizabeth? Are you still there?” he asked, bringing me back to reality.

“Yes, so why did you call?”

“Oh yes, okay, so I was in a meeting and we were talking about a new company opening up in Los Angeles, and they are in need of our assistance.” Connor said smoothly.

“That’s amazing! Would you have to go out there?” This was huge for the company, my father must be so happy.

“Yes, they are sending me and a few more guys out there.” Why wasn’t he happy about this?

“When do you leave?” part of me hoped it was soon, I was for some reason wasn’t upset with being away from my boyfriend.

“I leave in a week. And I’m sorry, I know it’s short notice. Believe me Elizabeth, I’d take you but I’d be working all the time and wouldn't have any time to spend with you.” Connor said in one breath.

“You leave in a week?” A normal girlfriend would be begging and pleading for their boyfriend to stay, but I honestly couldn’t wait.

“Yes, I’m so sorry. I’ll make it up to you as soon as I get back, though. I promise, Elizabeth.” his words made feel slightly guilty. He was upset to be leaving me?

“It’s fine, Connor.” I assured him

“Okay, if you say so. It’s in a week though, so we have some time for ourselves.” I could hear the smile in his voice.

“Alright..” was all I could say.

“Hey, how about we go get some dinner? Just you and me?” he sounded much more awake. I had a lot to do here, but I couldn’t bring myself to reject his offer.

“That sounds nice.” I smiled.

“Great, I’ll be there in about 20 minutes.” we both hung up.

*Harry’s POV*

I sat staring at the ceiling of my office, something that has become my daily routine since that night Ellie left my apartment. Maybe what I did was right, but that still didn’t stop my thoughts from drifting into the lovely idea of what would happen if she had stayed.

That’s what most of my daydreams consisted of while staring at the exposed support beams above me; the thought of what could have happened if she had stayed was something I couldn’t get out of my mind.

I still wondered what she was wearing underneath the tight black skirt and white button up that outlined her curves in the most heavenly ways. Part of me, a larger part than I’d have thought, wished that I never brought up Connor; that was the part that also kept urging me to call her and apologize for something, anything. Whatever made her come back.

I turned my attention to the phone on my desk, deciding whether or not I should man up and just fucking call her. Surely she missed me just as much? I’ll just call her, what could be so bad?

I gave in, grabbing the phone and dialing the number I’ve committed to memory. Three times it rang before she finally answered, making my hands already begin to become clammy.

“Harry?” she asked in a hushed tone.

“Hey, Ellie-” I began but soon stopped when I heard the voice I’ve heard on many occasions; the one that always made mine and Ellie’s nights end with awkward goodbyes.

“Yeah, hold on.” she said to him, hopefully reserving her attention for only me.

“Where are you?” I had to ask

“I’m busy right now, Harry…” her voice didn’t hold that playful tone I was used to; hearing her say my name didn’t even bring a smile like it always did.

“Okay.” was all I can say. What else could I say? She obviously didn’t want to talk to me.

“I’ll call you back tomorrow, okay?” Okay, so maybe it just was a bad time. I then felt more at ease knowing that she actually might want to talk to me.

“Alright, babe. Talk to you tomorrow.” I hung up the phone before she could say anything else.
