I looked up as I heard someone open a door. Through the open door, out of the corner of my eye, I caught the flash of a black coat, and then the door closed. However, I soon realized that I recognized that coat. I remembered it from somewhere back in my memory, but I could not remember from. I pushed those thoughts off to the side and focused on reading again.
Two weeks later, I found myself sitting in the same spot, in the same library. The same person opened the same door. I saw the same flash of the same black coat. Everything was the same. The same thoughts about the black coat were fresh on my mind. I knew I remembered it from somewhere.
One week after I last saw the coat, I somehow found myself back in that same place, in that same time. In the same library, with the same door, and the same person...
And the same flash of black coat.
This time I jumped up. This time I ran out the door before it closed. This time I forgot about the book I had been reading, and this time it lay forgotten at that desk, finally replaced by the black coat.
This time I didn't loose sight of it. This time I was scattering flocks of pigeons. This time I dodged the people in the street. This time I would not loose sight of the coat.
But this time it was moving away.
But this time I was catching up.
This time my memory was coming back. This time it dawned on me. This time I was remembering.
That enigma wrapped in a black coat.
This time I knew.
And I stood still.
On the street.
As the people filtered around me.
On the street.
And I smiled.
Because I remembered.
And I knew.

Cliffhangers
Short StoryThis is a book of just the beginnings of stories that I have scribbled down in notebooks, and spare pieces of paper. Most of them will be cliffhangers, and I will not be doing continuations of any of the chapters, so do not ask. You have been warned.
