fifth week of third grade.

"why were you talking to him?" joshua asked, pulling tyler to be near his face from the top of the playground.

"brendon just offered me a cookie, joshie."

"did you take it?" he asked with a relief obvious in his voice. he's over-protective of the younger boy, and he knew it and embraced it.

"no. it was peanut filled."

"yeah, peanuts are gross," joshua replied, making a disgusted face, sticking out his tongue.

tyler giggled at joshua's response, making josh stare at tyler and admire his undeniable adorableness.

"you're so cute, ty," joshua said, burying his face in the crook of tyler's neck innocently and inhaling his heavenly scent of vanilla. tyler wrapped his hands around the boy, giggling as joshua did the same tighter than he needed to.

he giggled more when joshua started tickling tyler from his sides, making him laugh at how cute he was responding.

"j-j-joshie!" tyler giggled, his back to the floor as he was struggling against josh's fingers gently hitting the spots on tyler's side that made him laugh, "s-stop it!"

joshua loved tyler's giggles.

of course, he wouldn't admit it, but he knew he did.

"look, everyone!" joshua heard brendon yell, making him stop tickling tyler and look over to his side at the black haired boy. "they're in love!" he said, pointing at joshua and tyler.

"be quiet brendon!" joshua said standing up, not paying attention to the fact tyler was still on the ground, looking up at joshua with a sense of heroism flooding his mind. "you don't know anything!"

the little scene they started has caused a small crowd of third graders to circle the playground, brendon at the bottom of the playground while joshua was at the top.

this was the closest thing to a school fight third graders like them would have.

"yes i do! i know that you two are in love! he's a guy! that's just wrong!" brendon said, mocking what his parents say. it was the eighties after all.

"no it's not!"

"yes it is!"

by now, they were in the middle of the playground, each meeting each other halfway and yelling at each other. tyler had stood up, but just stood with the others, watching as his 'hero' was going to save him.

brendon pushed joshua back, doing the only fighting he knows. joshua retorted with the same move, pushing him back farther.

by now they were extremely angry, brendon pulled on joshua's brunette curls and he winced loudly, trying to pull brendon's hand out of his hair while kicking his feet, trying to make him get off no matter what it took. he eventually made him trip by kicking the side of his leg, him catching himself, and not getting any closer from where he recoiled.

"it's still wrong, you freak!" brendon yelled, walking off somewhere to go pout that he had lost his first fight. a few people followed him, he was the leader of his little clique anyways. joshua just watched and soothed his pained head as he felt arms snake around him from his back.

"tyler?" he questioned, looking behind him to see the shorter brunette hugging him and burying his face in his shirt, comfortably squeezing him in a desperate attempt to make him his. "what are you doing?"

"hugging my hero, silly!" he giggled into his shirt, making him smile even though he just got into the worst fight of his life so far.

"you're so cute, tyler."

"i know! you tell me all the time!"
