"Listen carefully," He said to his awaiting audience "because I will only say this once"
My eyes scanned through the crowd looking for the brown eye'd girl I had spotted a few weeks back.
"You will never EVER" he continued, but I blocked him out.
After all these years I had managed to hear but not really listen to what he was saying. My eyes continued to search through the temple until it landed on a tight black and white stripped dress that clung tightly to her body.
A smirk graced my lips at how well the dress outlines her curves. Some would argue it might be a bit inappropriate for church.
There might be hope for her yet, I think.
"...do something so bad to make God love you any less!"
My ears tuned back into my surroundings and a loud cheer roared in the room as I rolled my eyes.
Fucking idiots.
I thought as I made my way over to her. Today would be the day we talked for the first time.
I noticed her a while back, she would come every Sunday but her seat would change every time unlike most people. The man on the altar had told me a bit about her family. How it was just her and her mother and I could hear the implications, of the horrors of teen pregnancy in his voice, which made me sick. It's none of his fucking business honestly.
But there was a hierarchy here. From the most to the least holy if that's how you want to put it, which I personally think is bullshit. It's really just a contest of who can hide their secrets better.
I learned a long time ago that no one here is as much as saint as they want you to think.
I slip in the empty spot beside her, a little too close for comfort apparently.
"Hi," she says, carefully backing away.
"Hi there," I say with a smirk resting on my lips. I'm not subtle about my eyes examining her body as she watches me with furrowed eyebrows.
"Are you okay?" she asks, and she actually sounds genuinely concerned.
Adorable
I flash her my best smile and nod as I allow my arm to rest on the backrest of the bench bringing us even closer together.
"I like your dress," I said leaning into her ear, so she could hear me above the man on the altar.
This seemed to relax her as she assumed I came by for girl talk.
"Thank you," she said with a bright smile. She bit her bottom lip in excitement and I was pretty sure she had no idea how sexy that looked.
"I'm Camila," she said happily.
"Lauren," I said simply.
She smiled and returned her attention back up to the altar while I watched her.
She was even more beautiful up close, her jawline looked sharper than a blade, she had inviting full pink lips and this hair that cascaded down her shoulders perfectly.
I was pulled back into reality when everyone in the room began clapping, including the beauty beside me.
I scoffed and shook my head
"You don't agree?" she asked
The beautiful brunette beside me took hold of my attention once more.
"I'm sorry?"
She gestured towards the man on the altar "You don't agree with the pastor?" she clarified.
I watched her with a small smile on my face.
She's innocent, how cute.
"Not particularly," I said even though I wasn't sure what topic he had moved on to now "Look around," I told as her eyes momentarily wondered the room "This is all an act," I said
"Praise Jesus," the man said softly as a low clap filled the room
"Watch," I said as I leaned in closer "He's going to say it again, but louder," I said into her ear
"Praise Jesus," the man said raising his voice
"And louder," I told her
He said it again.
"And louder, until he's shouting and everyone in the audience is screaming and clapping along."
Her eyes quickly shifted from me and back to the altar as everything I said was coming to life in front of her eyes.
"The last one he's going to yell and drag out for as long as possible. Then he'll grab a towel from the pulpit and wipe his forehead"
Within seconds the man was shouting
"Praaaaiiiisseeee!" before her wiped the sweat from his forehead with a towel.
She watched me skeptically as I smirked knowingly
"It's all about playing with people's emotions, getting them excited" I informed.
"Why are you here?" she asked. "If you don't believe in any of it, which you obviously don't," she said pointedly "Why are you here?"
A small smile landed on my lips before I pointed at the man on the altar, or what I like to call the stage, and leaned into her ear once again.
"See the guy on the suit?" I asked
She chuckled "Yeah"
"That's my dad"
