i paced the halls outside of Gavin's room. i could hear him sobbing, we had recently received news that Sophie had died unexpectedly five days before her wedding. Gavin yelled and cursed and cried and even made him self drunk to try to dull the pain. Laird Evans was in there with his son, saying things about how she was in a better place. that didn't stand well with Gavin and he yelled harder cursing all the stars above.

"I want to see her!" he yelled.

Susan was sitting on the bench looking out the window at the black of night. she looked to me and i nodded, we all knew that Sophie had been a very dear friend to us all and her death pained us all. We all had to pay our respects for the dead. Susan and i had planned on a combined wedding but with Sophie's death we had pushed the wedding back.

"Gavin,." his father warned.

"If you wont go, i will!"

Gavin threw the door open, his face was flushed and we all knew he was drunk. he took his cape and was already dressed to leave.

"GAVIN YOU WILL COME BACK THIS INSTANT!" the laird yelled startling me and Susan.

"NO I WILL NOT!" Gavin yelled back.

Will and Jonathan stepped out and grabbed their brother's arms. they pulled him back into his room. Gavin cursed and yelled, kicking and screaming that he was betrayed by his kin. Susan and i stood at this and watched them throw Gavin on his bed before they left him there, locking the room behind him.

for two days we could all hear Gavin yelling to be let out. on the third day he was sober and cried most of the time. the fourth day he was let out, the servants were a little nervous with him, but he treated them like he always did in his polite manner. he did not look at his father or his brothers. Susan and i watched him, waiting for his next move.

"Can we see her now?" Gavin quietly asked.

"Yes." Laird Evans replied.

Susan and i quickly left the dinning hall and changed in to black to respect Sophie. Susan and i sat quietly on our horses, alongside our fiances. Gavin rode silently up ahead next to his father, we hardly spoke. i kept thinking back to the pictures hidden in one of my favorite books, our smiling faces. i looked back to Gavin and decided to give him one i took of just Sophie laughing.

once we entered the village we could tell that most the people here new our dear Sophie. they looked at us pass silently to the small church at the end of the Town. Gavin was the first down and he picked up a bushel of wild flowers as he entered, i followed him linked arms with Susan. our heads were lowered. a man approached us with fair hair and pale skin, he gave us a sad smile. this must have been her father. an older man around the same age as the other stood by, i could see the bits of flower in his hair and hands. that must have been her fiance.

"We have come to pay our respects to Sophie, may we?" Laird Evans asked.

"Of course my lord, she talked highly of you, all of you." her father said moving out of our way.

Gavin led us in and walked to the stone rock where our small Sophie lay still, cold and pale as death. Gavin kneeled down next to her and moved some of her hair from her face.

"Hello Soph, it's me Gavin. i know you liked the wild flowers that grew about the castle, i couldn't find any there but i hope these work too." Gavin said.

i lowered my head so that i could hide my tears. Will put his arm around my waist drawing me closer to him. i could hear Gavin start to cry.

"Soph, why didn't you tell me, i thought 'no secrets'" Gavin said taking her cold hand in his.

i walked over and got on my knees next to Gavin.

"Hey Sophie, we miss you, i miss you. i thought you weren't going to leave." i said, before the tears came rushing down my cheeks as i remembered her begging me not to go.

i ran back to Will not being able to hide my tears anymore. i cried into his shoulder and hugged him feeling the pain of loss. she was such a good friend to me, i loved her like a younger sister, and now she was gone. just like that, i couldn't expect more this was an era where medicine hadn't adapted yet and for all i knew the doctor could have accidentally killed her.

the other's said their respects while Gavin stayed next to her holding her hand and crying. Laird Evans grabbed Gavin's shoulder telling him it was time to leave. my heart broke to see the boy who was usually so strong, weep and brake. i saw a side of Gavin i had never seen before.

Gavin stood, holding her hand to his heart and kissed her on the forehead before gently setting her hand back down on to her stomach and left. We rode back in silence. Susan rode next to me this time and we cried together. Gavin was ahead of us and i could only suspect what he was feeling.

once we got to the castle Gavin locked himself in his room. he stayed there for two weeks before he finally left it. he was always quiet and this weird trait became natural.

"Will, do you think he will ever love another girl?" I asked one night.

"i do not know." Will said looking at his brother.

"i am going out, i wont be home till late." Gavin said leaving the room.

we watched him go and disappear into the night. Laird Evans walked over and gave us all a sad smile.

"I believe i will retire to bed now." he said.

"Goodnight." i said with a smile.

he gave me another smile before he left. Susan and Jonathan left next speaking in hushed voices about Sophie and Gavin. Will soon after escorted me back to my room. i went straight to sleep.
