RECAP:
I sat with Summer, not wanting to take my eyes off her. I had almost lost her tonight. The paramedic came over and told us we had to leave, that only family could stay. They were crazy to think I'd let her out of my sight for even a minute.
Without even thinking I say, "We are family."

Two Hours Later:
"Cam, go get a drink... I'll be fine, I promise." Summer says, placing a comforting hand over mine as she sits in the hospital bed. As soon as they brought her in here, I placed a chair right next to her bed.
I shake my head. "Nope. Not leaving."
Summer looks at me. "What if I said I wanted you to leave?"
I frown but cover it up with a cough. "I guess..." I clear my throat, "I guess I would say that I'd leave if it meant you'd get better faster."
Summer nods her head. "I see... Now, what would you say if I wanted you to stay?"
My heart jumps wildly in my chest. "I would say that I love the idea... And that it would be an honor to be able to stay with the Summer Reed while she lays in a hospital bed."
Summer chuckles and places a gentle punch to my arm. I feign hurt and pretend to wipe a tear from my cheek.
I see Summer smirk out of the corner of my eye. "You know, you're one of the biggest baby's I've ever met," She mutters.
I look up in shock. "That's a complete lie, you've met Lucas," I retort, shaking my head.
"No, it's not a lie. Lucas is so much tougher than you are." She teases, acting natural by looking at her fingernails.
I scoff. "You really think that after my sister pretty much tapped his shin and he went crying like a little baby? All Amanda has to do is say 'boo,' and Lucas will take the next bus to Narnia."
Summer laughs. "Touché."
She sits up in the bed. "But in all seriousness, could you maybe get me something to eat? I would ask a nurse but I feel like they put NyQuil in the food so they don't have to deal with patients complaining 24/7."
I chuckle and stand up. "Sure, what would you like?"
Summer smiles up at me. "Surprise me."
I nod and lean down, kissing her forehead lightly. "Try not to get into any trouble, will ya? No parties."
Summer salutes me. "Sir yes sir!"
I chuckle and walk out the door. Giving one last glance towards Summer, I head down to the cafeteria.
Looking at all the different good options, I try and find something that Summer would like to eat. My eyes widen when I find it. Bingo. I get the food and bring it up to her room.
Once I reach the door, I peek in through the window and see Summer speaking to someone. Curious, I rest my head on the side of the door, eager to hear what was going on.
"What do you mean he was let out?!" Summer screams, her voice cracking at the end.
"That's exactly what I mean! He's out of jail... Free!" The voice shouts back. I hear the heart monitor pick up speed and that's when I make my entry.
"What's going on." I demand, placing Summer's food next to her. I look over to see Summers mom pacing around the room.
Summer's glassy eyes meet mine, "I know that you heard, but... Tommy was let out. Apparently the video footage was somehow lost so there is no real evidence of him doing anything wrong."
"Oh Sum," I sit next to her and pull her into my arms.
"Cam... Do you know how bad this is?" She squeaks, tears running down her cheeks.
"I know. I won't let him get to ya... I'll be your own personal bodyguard, yea?"
Summer looks at me, trying to keep a straight face.
"Free of charge?" I offer, raising my eyebrows.
Summer chuckles and nods her head, "Sure."
"But of course, if I were to get paid, I'd be asking for about 50 bucks an hour."
She snorts, "Thats wayyyyy overpriced."
"Need I remind you that I saved your life?"
Summer nods, "Yes, and were you getting paid then? Nope! You saved me on your own, you're naturally doing the right thing anyway."
"Touché."
I didn't notice Summer's mom walk out of the room, but she is now walking up and down the hallway, yelling at someone on her phone.
"Would you like the delicious hospital food I got you?" I ask, trying to lighten up the mood a bit more.
"Only if you try and take the first bite," Summer negotiates.
"Please, don't make me do it."
She shrugs, "I could always just wait until I get home... But who knows when that'll be."
I groan and grab the plate, "Fine!"
I cautiously lift up the piece of pizza to my mouth and cringe when the smell reaches my nose. I take a bite and nearly gag, but put on a smile and swallow it, forgetting to chew.
"See? It's amazing!"
Summer gives me a flat stare, "If it looked painful for you to eat, there is no way in hell I'm biting into that. Aren't boys supposed to like everything?"
"Obviously not everything," I retort.
Summer just shrugs and takes a sip out of the juice box I had also picked up for her, "At least the drinks aren't too bad."
I shake my head and chuckle, "You're a piece of work, you know that?"
Summer smiles, "I know."
