"That's good" Sonic whispered as he closed his eyes, his tail wagging. "Besides," Shadow mumbled, "you sound happy and I don't feel like ruining that"

As Shadow spoke those words, Sonic didn't hear them as he fell asleep. Shadow knew this by the way his body went limp and pressed further into Shadow's back. The ultimate lifeform shook his head. He carefully removed Sonic's arms from around his waist so he could turn around and rest the sleeping blue hero on his chest instead.

"Maybe waking you up so early is a bad idea" Shadow commented as he wrapped his arms around the hero, letting him rest. Shadow had stepped into something with the blue hedgehog and he couldn't quite understand what it was. He knew that he wanted something more than just rivalry with the hero and definitely something more than friendship.

It wasn't the matter of Mobius finding out, he didn't care if people hated him for loving someone, but if they hated Sonic for it? Shadow wasn't sure if he wanted that for the hero. It was the matter of Sonic letting the opinions of others go.

Shadow knew Sonic loved Mobius and he would do anything to stay their hero. So, would Sonic choose Mobius and being a hero over Shadow? That worried Shadow more than anything, but there was nothing he could do about it. He could only watch.

(Quick note: I played as Amy Rose in this chapter. It was quite interesting. Oh, and while I was playing the role of Amy, I learned that her original nickname was Rosy the Rascal. How strange.)

The thoughts that ran through Shadow's head made him aware of how his life changed in just a few hours. It was that stupid race that caused it. Shadow saw who the hero really was this time, and it wasn't because he lost a race and he acted like a sore loser instead of being a good sport, but because of that look on his face that Shadow had seen one too many times before.

It was that look that told him that there was something deeper haunting Sonic and Shadow, feeling the need to, put the hero's problems before his own. That didn't bother him, though. Shadow knew something that the blue hero never would and he was going to keep it that way.

The pressure on his chest was getting heavier as Sonic slowly delved deeper into his dreams as he slept. Shadow didn't much care if Sonic slept on him, it brought back the better times. However, keeping him there on Shadow's chest could bring up more than he wants, so he reached up and tugged on Sonic's ears.

"Wake up you blue idiot." He said, his voice slightly coarse from not speaking for a little while. The speedster groaned as his eyes fluttered open, revealing bright emerald eyes to spark to life as he woke. "What's the matter Shadow?" he mumbled as he let out a wide mouthed yawn.

"I'm thinking I should bring you home, I can't be that comfortable"

"Oh, but you are"

Sonic purred deeply as he pressed his chin to chest, his eyes half open and his body completely relaxed. "You're just saying that so you can keep me pinned down" Shadow smirks, his fingers trailing up the side of Sonic's face. He smirked back and scoffed, "That's just a bonus"

"You're lucky, Hedgehog" the ultimate lifeform commented, rolling his eyes. "Lucky for what Shads?" the hero asked as he pushed his nose into Shadow's chest fur, taking in his scent not so discreetly. Shadow snickered at his actions.

"You're lucky that you're the only one that I allow to be this close to me"

"Then I guess I am"

Those emerald eyes angled just right so that crimson eyes could stare back, lost in a gaze as the owner of green eyes moved closer to his charcoal counterpart.
