Up ahead there was a tall, mysterious building that looked like an abandoned church. The windows were made of broken glass and the structure itself was made of rotting wood. Everyone knew it was fake, but they were willing to pay $5 just to get the thrill and excitement of it. I wasn't that willing. My feet dragged along the cracked pavement as we made our way towards the Haunted House. Why did I agree to do this? I thought to myself as I heard screams up ahead.
"This is going to be so exciting!" Olive cheered, wearing a wide grin on her green face. "We're going to be sooooo scared." She skipped ahead, twirling in the moonlight to the beat of her happiness.
Why is she so happy to be scared? But I had no time to panic because we were at the Haunted House. The line seemed so short, and I cursed the people for not making it longer.
"Next," the Haunted House worker called. He was a werewolf, and wore rags that had probably been passed down in his family for generations.
The couple ahead of us entered and immediately screamed. "Babe, don't worry, it will all be okay," the boyfriend comforted as they continued on.
"No it won't," the girlfriend wailed, but willingly let her boyfriend drag her farther inside to a place of doom.
The worker sighed. "Just deal with it," he muttered to himself. He moved us inside. The moment I had been dreading.
Suddenly I was more frightful than ever. Skeletons will come back to life to haunt me in my dreams. I will die, I will die, I will die. It's just too scary. With a burst of energy, I took off down the sidewalk, getting farther away from the Haunted House. I'm gonna die, I. . . Will. . . Die. I thought to myself as I ran out of breath. I came to a stop in front of the library.
The library looked just as old as the Haunted House seemed, but was a lot larger. It was made of marbled granite, was two stories high, and had stained glass windows.
"Melanie, wait," Elizabeth called out in the darkness. She sounded very close by.
Uh oh, I thought to myself, worried. If she sees me she'll drag me back. Without a moments hesitation, I ran into the library.
