Alex's POV:

Just as I expected the night before, I woke up not wanting to get out of bed. I groan and slap my alarm clock in an attempt to turn the annoying noise off. I sit up and look at the time to see it's seven o'clock. I swing my legs getting out of bed grabbing the first clothes I find. I pull them on and walk out of my room, grabbing my phone on the way out. I walk to my mom's room to wake her up. I knock on the for a bit opening it and stepping in her room. "Good morning mother." I say smiling and creeping up to her bed.

"No, I want to sleep!" she groans over so her back faces me.

"Come on mom... don't you at least want to say goodbye before I head off to school?" I say sitting on her bed rubbing her back a bit.

"Fine, here let me give you lunch money so you can eat today." she says grabbing her purse. As she sits up I notice she didn't change out of her work clothes, she didn't even bother to take her makeup off.

"Mom you need to wash your face," I say "It's not good to sleep with makeup"

"I know," She yawns while stretching "I'll wash it after you leave." She fishes a five dollar bill out of her purse giving it to me. "Here it's for lunch. Eat."

"Thanks mom" I say pocketing the money. I give my mom one last kiss on the cheek before leaving for school. I hate the heat, it makes me feel sticky and sick. I get to school at eight thirty. I walk to my locker getting what I need out then go to the turtle pond to sit before class starts.

The first thing I notice is John is there. Does he have a free first or is he skipping class? I walk up to him to say hello.

"Good morning" I say walking behind him.

"Oh, morning Alex!" he says turning around.
"Do you have a free first?" I ask

"Yup, I spend the free time watching these little turtles," he says smiling. He likes turtles? That's so cute!

"You like turtles?" I ask tilting my head to the side a bit.

"I love them! I have four baby ones back home," he replies. "Do you have free first too?" he asks excitedly.

I giggle about how excited he is. "Yeah, I do" I say.

"Want to watch turtles with me?" he invites.

I smile "I already am, aren't I?"

He blushes slightly. "Um yeah!" he replies nervously.

I smile bigger at his cuteness, "Well, would you like to sit with me" I ask.

"Mmhm," he sits close to me. We sit in comfortable silence, enjoying each others company. After a few minutes later I break the silence.

"So, John Laurens, tell me something about yourself." I say.

He pauses to think for a moment. "I'm an artist, I lived here in San Francisco since I was three, and I know everyone at this school. Well except for you." he chuckles at the last part.

"Hah that's cool, you seem like a really cool guy John" I say.

"So what do you like? Tell me about yourself" He says.

"Well, what do you want to know?" I say looking into his golden eyes.

"Where are you from?" he asks

I look at my hands trying not to let them shake. I don't like my past thinking about it reminds me of my father and brother. "I grew up in the Caribbean, my mother and I moved here when I was twelve"

"That's cool, I heard it's beautiful there."

Not as beautiful as you "It really is,"

"What do you like to do in your free time?"
