"We best go inside Peter."
I nodded and he put his hand around my shoulders. We walked back to the house together, the sound of silence louder than ever.
Nobody seemed to be downstairs, which I was slightly thankful for. I started to head upstairs with Mr. Barrie, when I heard mother.
"Boys, I'll be fine. Don't worry about me."
I sighed and stood on the stairs for a moment. My head tilted downwards, revealing Mr. Barrie and I's feet. If I titled my head down far enough, the stairs turned into a smooth path, almost as if I had climbed a tall mountain. I brought my head back up and the stairs became rigid once more. I continued to climb to the top with Mr. Barrie by my side. I heard footsteps and crouched down, motioning Mr. Barrie to join me.
"What's wrong, Peter?" He whispered as we continued to crouch.
"I heard footsteps. I- I'm not ready to see my brothers yet... after... what happened," I whispered shamefully.
"Its okay, I understand," he whispered in reply, wrapping his arm around me.
The response shocked me. I'm not sure why, but sometimes I fell as if people don't understand me. I leaned into Mr. Barrie's side but he did nothing except continue to silently comfort me.
"I think they must be gone by now. Would you like to go see your mother?"
I nodded and began to get up when I heard the door open.
