Romeo & Juliet

Dan was stressing out. It was the middle of another long school day and Dan was silently pacing the schools drama room.
He looked up at the crowd of students in front of him, mostly older than him.
They were all talking. None of them payed attention to the younger boy standing in front of them. The younger boy who was meant to be directing the play that they were all taking part in.
Dan grabbed a stray chair and pulled it closer. He scrambled onto in and stood on top waving his hands.
"Guys. Guys! Guys!" Dan finally shouted. The talking died down and everyone gradually looked at him.
Dan tried to ignore the fact that they all looked at him with minor disgust. He knew that to them he was unimportant, but for some reason, the drama teacher had chosen him out of the whole class to direct the school play (a modern version of Romeo and Juliet). Something about unlocking his potential.
Dan didn't believe a word of it.
"Okay! For this scene, I'm going to need Romeo and Juliet center stage. The rest of you need to be behind them in a freeze frame position. Can we set up like that?"
Every moved sluggishly towards where they were meant to be. This was the second scene Dan was directing and was the first with Romeo and Juliet together.
He saw the girl who was playing Juliet, Kate, make her way through the crowd and stand proudly in the middle of the room. She flicked her blonde hair confidently. When Dan was casting the parts, he knew he had to cast her as Juliet. Not really because she had the right Juliet 'essence', but more because she'd have a fit if she wasn't.
Then, with his tall elegance and jet black hair, Phil made his way to the front. He stood next to Kate and, to Dans annoyance, they looked like the perfect match.
"Right, Kate, I need you to grab Phil's hands at the line '-meant to be'. Then Phil, I need you to pull her closer. Then we'll go into the kissing part." Dan spoke with confidence, but on the inside his heart was pounding. He didn't know why, but the thought of Phil kissing Kate made his stomach turn.
But there was barely time to think about that. It was only a play. It's not like the kiss would mean anything.
"Right. Action!"
The students in the background stayed still as Juliet recited her lines. As she got to the line - "We're made for eachother! We're meant to be!" - her voice dropped to an unemotional tone and she lamely grabbed Phil's hands.
Dan couldn't have that
"No, no! Be more...flirtatious! In love!" Dan told her. It was so like Kate  to screw up the one part that was important. Dan knew she probably didn't realist how lucky she was to be performing this scene with Phil.
"Again! Action!"
But it seemed like Kate got even more unemotional. She almost sounded bored. Dan couldn't help but think that it was impossible to be bored around Phil. What was up with her?
"Kate. You're doing it all wrong." Dan said, nicely but firmly.
Murmurs rose from the crowds behind them. They weren't used to a younger boy an older kid off.
"Daniel. Why don't you show her how it's done?" Said Phil.
Dan shrugged and stood in Kate place, oblivious to the flirtatious tone in Phil's voice.
Standing next to Phil, Dan suddenly got very nervous. He looked down at the script and started reciting the lines, just the way he had imagined them.
"We're made for each other." Dan pulled Phil closer until they were inches apart. His heart was racing and he was staring into Phil's blue eyes. He could've sworn he saw Phil's eyes dart down and look at his lips. Dans next line came out barely a whisper. "We're meant to be."
Suddenly, Phil was leaning in and Dan had the sudden realization that the kissing scene was next. He hadn't planned for it but it was too late to back out. Phil lips were brushing his and the world fell away.
The kissed, regardless of the now very confused and talking crowd around them.
When they broke apart, dans face was flushed. Phil looked at him with a slight smirk, but the older boy's cheeks were also turning a bright shade of pink.
"Right!" Dan said, a little too enthusiastically. "Kate. Do you think you could try do exactly that?"
"Oh, I can try," Kate laughed. "But I don't think it'll be quite as good."
