Dan and Phil stood on the grass of their small backyard in their brand new house.
The new home stood tall behind them. It was a modest bungalow with one master bedroom and two guest rooms. The one guest room had already been turned into a study.  They have hopes of turning the other into a nursery.
The sun was setting, covering their garden with an orange, hazey light. Their house was set on a hill with a perfect view of the small British town that stood below them. There, they felt on top of the world.
Dan's hand was gripped in Phil's. They stood there together and watched the town below. Fireworks were just starting to go off as the darkness settled around them. The wheez and crack of them made Dan feel excited. The sounds of the crackers made Phil feel safe in Dan's grasp.
"I can't believe another year has gone by" said Dan, still gazing at the now star filled sky.
"I know.  But look what we did with it.  It couldn't have been a better year." Phil said, a smile playing at his lips.
"Actually, getting a dog could've made it a better year..." muttered Dan.
"How many times do I have to tell you," Phil said, exasperated and shaking his head, "getting a dog is the first thing we're doing next year. It's the top priority."
Dan chuckled and laid his head on Phil's shoulder. It was getting considerably colder and they snuggled closer. They both felt incredibly at peace.
"I love you, Phil. You know that right?"
"I know, Dan."
"Thanks for all this, Phil. Really, you've made my life incredible."
Phil suddenly turned towards Dan and  kissed him. That was answer enough for Dan.
"Happy New Year, Dan" Phil said as they broke apart. "And thank you."
"For what?" Dan asked curiously.
"For everything. For this moment, right now. Thank you."

And they didn't move from their new garden in their new house until long after midnight.
