Chapter 7
Jasper
"Dreams come true. Without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them." - John Updike
Jasper was not afraid of the dark. In fact, he was afraid of nothing, or so he thought. He could keep on destroying the devoratrix for years, without even stopping to rest. He was built to kill and kill he would. Jasper loved the sound of his ax slicing through his enemies, loved the smell of blood mingled with victory. He was a winner, not a loser.
He walked to a silver door, that had a strange bird handle on it. Jasper had nowhere else to go, so he opened the door. A vast expanse of green stretched out in front of him. He was mesmorized. the valley was so real and so beautiful. But that did not compare to the girl who stood in front of him.
Her hair was a striking red color, and her eyes a startling blue. She had a beauty spot on the left side of her face. She wore a beautiful white gown, with no shoes. He couldn't speak. She frowned at him and walked over.
"Who are you?" She crossed her arms, then narrowed her eyes. "Or should I say what are you?"
"J-Jasper. Experiment, uh, 7."
Her frown faded and she smiled at him. Jasper's heart flipped in his chest. "Oh okay, that'll do. My name is Scarlet, and I'm experiment 13. Come, we have a lot of work to do."
Jasper scratched the back of his head and stood, rooted to the spot, as she walked away, her gown flowing in the soft breeze. He thought it would never happen, but he had finally found his one fear: Love.
"Um, what exactly are we doing-"
Scarlet held up her hand. She closed her eyes and spread out her arms.
"Maybe this isn't the best time to-" Jasper started.
Scarlet shushed him. A wave of air hit her bare skin. She flicked her wrists and the wind disappeared. Scarlet kept her eyes closed. Eventually the breeze returned.
She nodded and opened her eyes. "It is clear," she said calmly.
Jasper furrowed his brow. "Uh, what is?"
Scarlet tilted her head and Jasper's face suddenly got red. "This dream room, it is clear. We should sleep."
Now it was Jasper's turn to feel confused. "But this is a dream, isn't it not possible to-"
Before he could finish, she was laying on the ground, her eyes closed and her red hair tousled, a curl hanging over her face. He smiled and took off his brown leather jacket, laying it on Scarlet's back. Jasper sighed and rested his head on the soft grass.
Suddenly, the room got dark and stars, more than he could count, appeared above him. Then a single light streaked across the sky. Jasper closed his eyes and made a wish, hoping more than anything, that it would come true.
